What we know!

  • 156 condominiums featuring 10-foot ceilings and balconies
  • The first floor will have street-level retail. A restaurant, coffee house and an ice cream shop are all strong possibilities.
  • The second floor will house office space.
  • The project is expected to be finished in 20 months (February 2008).
  • A possible 30-story companion tower might be in the works.

it looks like we'll hear something really soon about the Wachovia Tower in downtown Greensboro :)

I just want to comment that I am very impressed with this building, very impressed. I am frankly surprised that there is the demand expected in DT for a res tower this high, but what the hell, speculate at will!! The architecture and location alone may create the demand itself. Great design.

Developers have said they really dont know whats driving the demand but others say that more and more people want to live in a more urban and sophisticated evironment where they can walk to their jobs and walk to restaurants, the library and other entertainment.

At the bottom of the N&R article, the Board of Commissioners said "we can't wait to see what's next, in fact we will sell you the land for what is next." Apparently referring to the land on the corner of North Eugene and West Lindsay. :-)

Hopefully he'll build a something like a 10 story building on that corner. The corner is positioned so that the building wouldnt really block the view of Greensboro's skyline from the grandstands. County leaders are certainly expecting more projects just as grand meaning more highrise projects. I think the renovation of the Wachovia Building will spark those kind of projects. All it takes is one project to start a chain reaction. I do know that corner property (Eugene and Lindsay) is large enough for a tower and a parking deck for the tower. My guess is that he'll build something mixed use that will include something like a sports bar, being that its across the street from the ballpark, restaurants and other entertainment. The land is big enough for a small multiplex as well.

One of the county commissioners stated that

"The redevelopment of this building will add a spark to the skyline and begin a great new chapter in the revitalization of downtown."
