Sounds exciting if you're moving to Asheville and have $400K+ to spend on a house and want to live in a gated community on what was, until now, agricultural or forest land. That's what "The Cliffs" builds. Sounds like branding, not like sustainable development.

What's a few million here and there? Anyway, you are probably right that the Cliffs does a better job than average at laying out subdivisions. Some large trees are saved. Hills are not leveled. And we know the developers are sincere, because they say on their website that

An article from the Greenville News this morning regarding the Cliffs at High Carolina. Tiger was in Travelers Rest, South Carolina at the HQ for the Cliffs Communities for a press conference announcing this course yesterday.
