Looks like straight up vandalism

Maybe someone cut it down, took it to their condo, and decorated it for Christmas like some hipster trying to be ironic or something. Kind of a dick-move if you ask me.

Not the best for public perception of Uptown after the riots. 65 year old newspaper delivery man for the Observer found dead in the road by Bearden Park shot and another man shot and wounded at Tryon/MLK with non life threatening injuries. There have now been 11 homicides in Charlotte since the new year (we may break 100 this year, it isn't even summer). Police will be investigating if they knew the shooters and towed a black pickup truck away from the scene. If this is random gun violence in the center city, yikes.

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but I miss the old days when Brevard Court was a hidden gem.  It's already a madhouse during baseball season, but certainly the hotel & offices will bring increased business.

I know, I know...

A friend of mine owns Nefelie's and told me how people vandalize their flowers, and patio furniture all the time and how they litter in the alleyway as well. I remember it used to never be like that.  Maybe it would be better to have security in that area?

^ I might have preferred it in another material too, but its a pretty nice piece. Definitely one of the better abstract public sculptures we've gotten in recent years.

Excerpt from "Conversations: Romare Bearden and Richard Hunt" -- The Mint Museum website: https://www.mintmuseum.org/art/exhibitions/detail/romare-bearden-gallery/

On September 2, 2013, in conjunction with what would have been Bearden’s 102nd birthday, Romare Bearden Park, of the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department, opened just one block north of Mint Museum Uptown on North Church Street. Hunt was commissioned to create a monumental public sculpture in homage of Bearden. Due to the shared history between the two men, this commission stands out among the over 130 public commissions Hunt has completed throughout his career. Other commissions located nearby include Three Crosses at University Park Baptist Church in Charlotte, as well as public work in Greensboro, N.C.; Winton-Salem, N.C.; and Greenville, S.C. Of this monumental work of art, Hunt has stated: “I intend to create a sculptured collage, a spatial frame that contains references to Romare Beardenʼs artistic practice, his traditions, and his inspirations.”

...15 feet off the ground...

It does look like a prop from a strange Scandinavian murder mystery though. I picture someone found impaled at dawn. I guess just driving through the construction on 85 brought murder to mind.
