So a representative of a specific dept in Mecklenburg Parks & Recreation is contacting property managements in the radius around Romare Bearden to get some survey info on dog owners in the area.

They are exploring the feasibility and necessity of installing a dog park somewhere nearby - not necessarily in Romare Bearden, but at least in the vicinity.

The biggest issue is reportedly not pupper bombs, but rather the damage that doggy urine is causing to the trees. Scores of dogs wee-weeing every single day in the same spot takes its toll; they have apparently had to replace four trees this year that have died from canine tinkle.

I guess thousands of residents moving to the area in 4 years will do that...

While I'd miss the space that this would take up in Romare Bearden, this would definitely help the health of the park. Also, I have no idea where they would install such a park if not Romare. The point is to sustain the immediate park population, so they'd have to make it Romare-centric.

lol I like your descriptions.  But yes, it is a problem I think they need to address somehow.  Back in the day when it was just the Catalyst, you'd just take your dog across the street where one of those abandon buildings used to be lol.  But now you have the Element, Ascent, even the Kimpton is dog friendly.  That's a ton of dogs.  There's a lot of sections at Romare though where they could possibly fit it in, but like you, would miss the space.  If it were to be at Romare, these would be my spots, however, it would get rid of those nice plants they do.

Outside of Romare: Depending upon timeline of gateway, could use one of those big parking lots in the mean time.  2nd option is the triangular plot of land at the Mint Street deck (which looks primed for a similar SpringHill Suites type of hotel).

My only concern is, okay you have a dog park, but will the convenience of just letting your dog pee on the grass/tree  trump walking to wherever they build it?

It would be awesome if they could work something out with the ballpark and convert the grassy area behind the jumbotron at BB&T Park.  I know there is a bit of a slope there, but its not being used for anything else at the moment.

Considering the ballpark is only leasing the land for $1 and has been silent on future development for over a year, I don’t think the county will continue holding the land hostage if a dog park is that dire for the area.

4th Ward park has tons of dogs every day, and no problems. Is it just small and/or newly planted trees that have this issue?

I call BS on this, the tree part that is. Yes they have replaced the grass directly in front of Element 2/3 times nows which the qty of dog pee does kill.

I personally think they have a maintenance issue with the park. They need some regular TLC on the concrete, lighting, benches, and yes even half the flower beds are barren wood chipped wastelands even in the warm months.

What about the one of the few perfect trees you allowed to be cut down for the ESPN College Game Day set? That was never replaced. Probably for the better as would have been replaced with a twig rather than something that had 4 years of growth.

The winter overseed they do is a joke and a waste of money. The first year they did it was done with a machine that plugs into the ground. Ever since done with a manually thrower and does nothing except close the grass for 2/3 week while it grows. Then it’s perfect for 1 week and then just brown and patchy.

They need to thicken the grass up at the roots. It’s like hair needs volume and thickness not strands. 4th Ward has this somehow.

I’m in this park everyday, some days 2/3 times maybe I just notice this more than someone who only occasionally strolls through. Idk.

Anyone know why Mecklenburg Polaris GIS shows Romare Bearden Park as having multiple co-owners in a sub-divided manner? Who the heck is Bobbie Sheilds?

Bobbie Shields was County Manager, or interim at the time of the park creation. Why his name might be on the county Polaris site, I cannot say.

They don't have any reason to merge the legal parcels, so they are just the remnants. The county owns it, and the deed transfers clearly just had his name at attention for the paperwork as the county manager.

What’s the story with this “AutoPark” at the corner of 4th and Church?  It is a fairly short, ugly parking deck. I walked around it today and it doesn’t look like it is built into the buildings around it on either side. I know there are other empty lots that need to go first but I was struck by how ugly this stretch of Church is today and thought that knocking this down would do a lot to improve the block.

^^^ I told you that had a Canadian filmed Hallmark Christmas movie set in a fictitious NC  town outside of Charlotte was shown last Dec.   Now maybe they are actually going to use some real photos of Charlotte which that would be great.   Part of the plot of this Hallmark movie was this womans biggest customer was moving here HQ to Charlotte and she would be able to live in NC with her new beau in small town NC. 

Just talked to mom she is excited a Hallmark movie is being filmed here!
