Developer proposes 24-story Elliot Park tower

By Sarah McKenzie

Another condo tower is slated to rise in Downtown's Elliot Park neighborhood -- the area's third tower over 20 stories in the past two years.

Horty Elving & Associates has proposed a 24-story tower with 120 to 140 "New York"-style lofts priced between $175,000 and $300,000.

The new tower would go up on a one-half acre block next to the firm's 505 E. Grant St. offices, bounded by Grant and 14th streets and Portland and 5th avenues. The site is on Elliot Park's southwestern edge near the entrance to Interstate 35W.

The condo tower would rise due south of the Grant Park tower, 500 E. Grant St., a 27-story high-rise nearing completion. The project has been credited with sparking a flurry of development in Elliot Park, which has long been a low-income area made up mostly of renters.

A block from Grant Park, a Chicago developer, Tandem Developers, has proposed a 26-story condo tower at South 10th Street and Portland Avenue. The project is due before the Minneapolis Planning Commission in June.

Horty Elving & Associates representatives have met with members of the neighborhood group Elliot Park Neighborhood, Inc. (EPNI) to go over design plans. Some board members raised concerns about the project's height at a recent neighborhood meeting.

The board, however, passed a motion supporting the project's concept. EPNI also created a task force to further review the condo proposal.

The development of condo towers in the twin cities is insane! Going to have a Vancouver pretty soon with all of those condo towers.
