I realize I'm 500 miles away but I'd like to add that I've only run my ACs about 5-7 times this year :-) really has been a treat. My wife and I had to put on an extra blanket, fall came this morning.

Today's 8 degree low at CLT was the 2nd sub 10° low in Charlotte this year,  the 1st time since 2003 CLT has done that.

No, it is only the 11th coldest January, and December was mild. It has been a lot colder in the past.

I was curious how the 5-degree low could be at 7:34am, when the hourly readings at 7am and 8am were 16 degree and 13 degrees, so I asked Brad Panovich (via the twitter machine).

 

He said due to cold-air draining and evaporative cooling, but also pointed me to this blog post from 2011, which is both hilarious (regarding the inaccuracy of the CLT temps) and informative:

Looks like we're looking at snow and sleet for the mid-part of this week. It's also looking more serious than what we got a couple of weeks ago. NCDOT did very good last time around, hopefully they do the same here, so we can avoid a similar situation to what happened in Atlanta.
