Looks like more tourist and businessmen are flying out of Augusta Regional.

Year starts with big jump in airline traffic

More airline travelers are choosing to fly out of Augusta than in the previous two years.

In the first four months of this year, 1,400 more travelers boarded commercial airlines at Augusta Regional Airport than in the same period in 2007 and 2,500 more than in 2006.

There are now 13 flights leaving Augusta daily. Going into the summer travel season, the Delta connection, Atlantic Southeast Airlines, has six daily flights, said airport spokeswoman Diane Johnston.

US Airways Express recently added a seventh flight. US Airways' enplanements from January to April are 18 percent higher than a year ago. Enplanement, the industry term for people boarding a flight, is the measure of the airport where travelers start a trip.

On average, 428 people departed Augusta on airlines every day during 2007, according to airport data. For the first four months of 2008, the airport has been averaging 469.
