P8 is a good group. They have enlightening topics at their meetings and they are free and open to all who are interested in encouraging more interesting architecture in Charlotte. Another group worthing looking at is CharlotteViewpoint.org. They publish a web magazine focused on ideas to make Charlotte's urban areas dense and diverse.
