Takes a lot of time to make sure a historic theatre isn't going to collapse when you start digging and building. Takes a lot of time to figure out the engineering of the skinniest building in Charlotte History, and how to make it not screw up a historic theatre. Why is everyone crying about how long this is taking?

I’m not going to cry about how long it’s taking, so long as the project is not thought to be imperiled.

I think part of the hangup is the Project Manager left like 8 months ago and they had to find a replacement.

Just glad it's happening, but closing off lanes like this is a real PITA (and further delays having a protecting bike lane through uptown).

If it’s taking so long for the sake of preserving the theatre then that’s understandable since that is one of the most important parts of this project... just as long as it does in fact get built. Maybe we’ve gotten a little spoiled by how fast things are being built on S. Tryon, haha.

The speed of projects on South Tryon caused significant damage to the historic church on South Tryon, so theres definitely reason for caution.

This.  Having that damn bike lane on a major entryway through the city is the most Charlotte thing ever.  Surprised they didn't paint the damn thing beige!

Yeah....I think a Trade St route would have been much better.  That said, at least it should kill street parking between Tryon and Pine

The delays on this project were numerous

-The original hotel developer walked away from the project, and they had to find a new one
-There was significant and unexpected environmental cleanup required
-Changes on the design team

Work on the theatre itself has been progressing independently of what you see outside, and there's quite a bit to do in there.

The protected bike lane isn't being extended through due to the Library project, plus the fact that there will be major utility work continuing on and crossing 6th in 18mo and they didn't want to open a portion and just close it down the road. Not to mention this is a trial, and the permanent separation won't be the plastic poles but some kind of concrete planting box or other options being explored. When that is decided it will be implemented across the entire route between both greenways.

Not clear why urban planeteers are arguing so much against a bike lane, but as CLT> mentioned, the bike lane will not be built on this block until after the national convention and will be built into the sidewalk on the library side of the street, built along with that project. 

Protected bike lanes should be nearly everywhere to help encourage non-auto traffic.   Considering how many times I have nearly been hit and *killed* on 6th street, all traffic calming and slowing effects are highly welcome from me, and will certainly only add a few minutes to the lives of theater and hotel visitors.  

I am excited about the progress of this tower, and the sheer density on its small footprint.  Knowing that they have both a developer and project manager walk away is a bit concerning, but I am glad to see that they are still moving forward and have hopefully found replacements for them.

I know we all want this one done quicker but this is at its heart a HUGE important historical preservation project with a tall glass hotel on top.  I want it done right and I truly believe this will be the place that will be  a huge source of local civic pride.
