Update on Carolina Theatre and Hotel InterContinental in today's Charlotte Business Journal,  "What's next for Carolina Theater site as Crane is set to rise" by Ashley Fahey.

Excerpts:  "The Foundation for the Carolinas said it will be installing a tower crane at the theater site, which sits at corner of North Tryon and Sixth streets, this weekend."  ...  "The tower's foundation work has been ongoing for about a year or so, with 123 macropiles drilled into bedrock.  This fall, work includes constructing pile caps, which will tie the piles to the vertical steel, and cast-in-place concrete foundation walls."  ...  "During the next 18 months, additional construction will occur inside the theater, including a new stage level, putting back the orchestra level, plastering and infrastructure work on the bathrooms, dressing rooms, concession stands and the like."  "Work inside the theater included some demolition of floor slabs, which created room for new equipment and storage space in an expanded basement area under the orchestra-level seating.   New steel framing will be added in the stage house to meet structural building-code requirements."  ...  "It is expected the new tower will begin to rise above ground by year's end.   The crane will initially be installed at the tower's elevator core, then moved to another pad on Tryon Street once the building reaches the eighth floor or so, Laura Smith, Exec. VP at the Foundation,  said.   Intermittent closures of parts of Sixth Street are expected throughout construction but no long-term road closures are anticipated."  ...  "When macropiles were being dug for the project, a significant amount of water was discovered below ground, at around 100 feet or so.   We had to capture all of that water and truck all of (it) off the site.  More than 330,000 gallons of water was ultimately taken offsite during the project's foundation work."

The water thing is fascinating. Will it not just return? Is it somehow different than standing ground water? I obviously know little about hydrology!

the water table is really high in this area not sure if it was natural ground water or what but our water table is fairly high here.

Its as much removal of sediment causing poor drainage as it is removal of water itself and replacement of poured concrete to prevent. All 3 things will lead to a strong foundation: removal of poor drainage soil, removal of water (even if it is a natural aquifer or spring), then the pouring of concrete to seal the site.

"trucked off site" sounds like contamination was found, otherwise it could have gone into the storm sewer

I hope not or we might have a moment like Pittsburgh had earlier this week with a massive sinkhole swallowing up a city bus.

I saw that photo and decided that there was previous damage or repair in that spot since the pavement hole is perfectly rectangular. Not at all as normal collapsing pavement.
