I wouldn't say sub par, maybe just a smaller company. They are top notch at historic preservation though.

Well then, thats even better news...for some reason I had developed the impression that they were a less than desirable company to be completing this project.

I do not now nor ever have I ever had any inside knowledge into any of these projects, but I know this:  the Masters of the Universe types I know (whose balls I break consantly but I am in point of fact very very close friends with half a dozen of them) are loving working from home right now.  You mean I don't have to wander down to LaSalle/Franklin/Wall Street and I can conduct all my business from my study?  I can go get lunch with that BumbleBabe/BumbleBro and not worry about running back to the office to be in another pointless meeting that could have been accomplished with a memo?  I can see my children more in the last two months than I've seen them in the last two years?  They're probably gonna decamp me from my Class A office building, or at most have me use a conference room on the rare occasion I absolutely have to be in the office?  That I'm gonna be judged significantly more on my production and significantly less on office politics and/or the fact that Chaz is an MD because his grandpa went to Harvard with Chet's grandpa?

I know this is a hotel, but regardless of if and when the economy comes back, people who occupy those downtown hotels and downtown office buildings are starting to realize en masse there are very few reasons to be in an office all day long and even fewer reasons to travel for business giving the ubiquity of Zoom.  Will this get built?  I dunno I don't know what drives the decision makers' decisions, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to be building a 400 foot hotel in a future where both employers and employees are waking up together to the fact that a TON of overhead expense and business travel was completely unnecessary in 2020, and that business as usual is dead dead dead.

Maybe you're right, but I for one HATE working from home. I can't get anything done.

My next door neighbor is an investment banker and his entire department is having a rough time getting information from one another (it's one thing to get up from your desk and walk three cubes over to ask a question--especially when time is important, than it is trying to ping someone who might not answer). Tacit knowledge will always be important. The ability to be in the same room with other humans will always be important--especially when creativity is in play. 

And I despise Zoom. I'm exhausted when I finish a meeting by trying to figure out which damn square to look at.

Major truth here!   I feel the same way.    I think by the time this hotel opens it will do  fine with all the visiting execs to Truist.

For every article there is about the future of everything being work from home, there are two others that remain unwritten because no one has asked 'would you like to go back to your office?' There are many jobs and professions which can be done remotely, but doesn't mean they should be. Over time the value gained from interaction and non digital feedback will drain away a valuable store of knowledge and know-how. Face to face meetings, travel, and offices will come back, and people will need hotels more than ever. It just won't be in 2020. I'm sure the IC is going to do well, and the community space that the Carolina Theatre will become will thrive as well.

That is a long way between the ground level and next upper level elevator lobbies.

There is one more pour for the elevator shaft then the next tower crane will be erected.  And I believe the trees on Tryon will be removed.

Likely just a gap with a seal at the exposed edge. I expect that the old theater and the new tower will move independently of each other, so there will be a continuous movement/expansion joint where the two structures meet up.

Today 2:10 p.m. - Work underway in the old Carolina Theater; hoisting ropes fitted to the top & sides of the Theater; old mullioned windows being removed; men busy atop the new elevator core.

does the foreman know this is the most watched construction site in all of the Carolinas?   I admit the first thing I look for is workers and I never do that on any other project but this one.
