Yeah the FFTC building is so elegant. Beautiful building that doesn’t get much attention. But it’s hard not to admire it when you walk by.

Montaldo, a store for women's clothing and shoes. Architect Lewis Asbury. My historian in residence at my residence (my wife) says it was the only shop in Charlotte for Weejuns (shoes popular in her time. And still) . Top fashion for the best families including formal wear, wedding and prom dressing and furs.  The European look of the building was intentional.  For the carriage trade, as the phrase goes.

the old Montaldos store is a great historical save for Charlotte.  when BofA wanted to develop what is now known as Truist Tower the bought the building.  They donated it to the Foundation for the Carolinas.  It is a great building and does look like the buildings on any Euro city. It was a very upscale store the entire length it was opened as such.  My poor mother and her sisters never went in it because they knew they could not afford it when they were in the 20s.

A man I worked with in the early 1970's was of common stock and upright, and admirable in all respects. He was from near New London, NC. Paul said his wife knew how to sew and had made clothes for their family. The kind of thing people in rural NC who survived the Depression knew to do. When his daughter wanted a gown for high school prom, circa 1960, his wife went to the Montaldo's window and found one appropriate and studied it for a good amount of time. She went into the store, took notes about the fabric and style and cut and then came home, purchased material and notions and made a copy of the dress. Paul was so proud of his wife for that. I was amazed, and still am.

With the symmetry shown in QCxpat's last photo I almost rather they not.  It looks like a European street scene.

I kind of think they will. I think they are slow rolling it. Awhile back air rights acquisition was discussed. The Thing I didn’t understand about that was starting construction before rights were attained. Anyone know, does that happen a lot?
Vaccines are happing. The world is unclenching a bit I think.
If they put a roof on this and complete this little portion and open in a year or so for business I don’t see it ever going under construction again to rise anymore as a tower.
Does anyone here have credible up to date info on what is gonna happen with this?

Agreed, I'd rather have a square mile of DC height buildings than worry about the height of a tower unless it has a stunning design or something.  Street presence any day.

I thought SB&G already had air rights secured for this, but somebody could correct me if I'm wrong. The US might be unclenching a bit, but they mostly own hotels globally and have been hit extremely hard during this time. I agree with you though that if they don't do the hotel now, it would be very difficult to restart construction, but if they can buy another few months to make that decision while they build out the Carolina Theatre than maybe it could still go

Exactly! I don’t see them really roofing this and then deconstructing the roof to then continue the hotel on top. I feel like it would be a done deal. And I hate to say it....I liked the idea of the hotel but they are probably better off acquiring some nearby land and developing a large hotel nearby.

You know Museum Tower attached to Duke Energy Center commenced construction 6 years after the rest of the complex was completed right ? I don't understand why this is such a hard concept to understand. The roof doesn't need to be "deconstructed" thats not how this works. Adding a floor onto your house is difficult sure, but adding 30 floors onto a building which was engineered for 30 more floors isn't hard. Vantage's parking deck is ready for its hotel to start, when its ready, no "deconstruction" is happening. You prepare, and start when ready.  I can't say this enough, the success of the theatre is partially leveraged on the air rights sale. Something will be built here, and the only thing that could be built at these specs is hotel, and with the complexity and size of this site, it'll be a tall hotel.

You could be right but there's no need to be so pessimistic. A dollop of hope can go a long way.
