JacksonH 1323 Report post Posted December 30, 2020 (edited) 7 hours ago, RANYC said: Really excited to see the full length of Tryon in Uptown fill up with structures, and especially low-to-mid-rise structures like this Theater, which helps to enhance a pedestrian-scale, urban living room feel to our Main Street. I only wish we acted with urgency when it comes to the state of the northernmost part of our city's main boulevard. Why can't we start to think of this as our Champs-Elysees, and act and promote it accordingly. Yes! No skyscrapers on North Tryon, please. This section of the street is aesthetically perfect. Just keep it up with more complementary architecture and buildings that engage and attract pedestrian life. FOLLOW-UP: And yes, I would not be disappointed if the Intercontinental gets built at a different location. As I've stated a number of times. my primary concern is that the theater is saved and restored. Apart from that, this corridor along N. Tryon contains a number of beautiful structures that should be protected, and not overwhelmed by surrounding them with skyscrapers. I posted a video earlier in this thread about how buildings taller than five stories have a negative impact on the beauty of a city from a pedestrian perspective, and why the lack of such structures in the greatest European cities contributes to their beauty and attracts tourists Edited December 31, 2020 by JacksonH 3

I'm still hoping the hotel happens eventually, but we're getting a much needed project to enhance the fabric of the city in the mean-time. So grateful the Carolina Theater is being renovated rather than razed.

KJHburg 69456 Report post Posted January 17 My drive by shot yesterday and again I noticed a good number of people walking about in uptown which is a great sign.
rancenc 2975 Report post Posted January 17 The building to the right of the Belk Construction in @KJHburg's photo has always and still is a very elegant building. Reminds me of the 2-5 story structures that predominate in Europe's cities that combine both residential and commercial space. Would be nice if this style of architecture could be replicated in some of the inner city neighborhoods or even in the underdeveloped parts of the center city. If I am not mistaken, this building housed a women's clothing store by the name of Montaldos. I also believe that it was tied into the old CityFair complex back in the late 80's/early 90's as well.
Yeahdoug 455 Report post Posted January 17 Yeah the FFTC building is so elegant. Beautiful building that doesn’t get much attention. But it’s hard not to admire it when you walk by.
tarhoosier 5589 Report post Posted January 17 (edited) Montaldo, a store for women's clothing and shoes. Architect Lewis Asbury. My historian in residence at my residence (my wife) says it was the only shop in Charlotte for Weejuns (shoes popular in her time. And still) . Top fashion for the best families including formal wear, wedding and prom dressing and furs. The European look of the building was intentional. For the carriage trade, as the phrase goes. https://vintagefashionguild.org/label-resource/montaldos/ Edited January 17 by tarhoosier

KJHburg 69456 Report post Posted January 17 the old Montaldos store is a great historical save for Charlotte. when BofA wanted to develop what is now known as Truist Tower the bought the building. They donated it to the Foundation for the Carolinas. It is a great building and does look like the buildings on any Euro city. It was a very upscale store the entire length it was opened as such. My poor mother and her sisters never went in it because they knew they could not afford it when they were in the 20s.
tarhoosier 5589 Report post Posted January 17 (edited) A man I worked with in the early 1970's was of common stock and upright, and admirable in all respects. He was from near New London, NC. Paul said his wife knew how to sew and had made clothes for their family. The kind of thing people in rural NC who survived the Depression knew to do. When his daughter wanted a gown for high school prom, circa 1960, his wife went to the Montaldo's window and found one appropriate and studied it for a good amount of time. She went into the store, took notes about the fabric and style and cut and then came home, purchased material and notions and made a copy of the dress. Paul was so proud of his wife for that. I was amazed, and still am. Edited January 18 by tarhoosier 5

Yo Diaz! 1397 Report post Posted February 10 They may as well keep going up with the hotel. I kind of think they will. I think they are slow rolling it. Awhile back air rights acquisition was discussed. The Thing I didn’t understand about that was starting construction before rights were attained. Anyone know, does that happen a lot? Vaccines are happing. The world is unclenching a bit I think. If they put a roof on this and complete this little portion and open in a year or so for business I don’t see it ever going under construction again to rise anymore as a tower. Does anyone here have credible up to date info on what is gonna happen with this? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
