Chattanooga/ Atlanta ties

I agree pretty much with this assessment. I would like to add that the Chattanoogans that live on the Tennessee side are first and foremost Tennesseans and identify much more with Tennessee than Georgia. Still, there are approximately 100,000 metro Chattanoogans that live in Georgia that probably feel more attached to Atlanta than, say Nashville.

I agree that there is a strong desire in Chattanooga to someday become Atlanta's 2nd airport. I think it's a long shot, though. High speed rail between the two cities is probably a must for the airport idea to have a chance to materialize.

In response to the VW plant the Chattanooga Airport has requested approval for the handling of international flights. The approval has been granted and the airport is seeking funding, and discussing air cargo needs with VW as well. The airport is also expecting a general increase in emplanements of 1-2% from VW related business.

Delta Airlines has announced that daily Chattanooga Detroit service will begin 7 September 2010, using a 50 seat regional jet. Chattanooga Airport Authority CEO says that it is an indication of VW's impact on the region.
