Wandered from the South Loop to the top of the Magnificent Mile. What a walk, what a city!

1429401889_0a11fa3fe2.jpg

So many cranes to build condos for the people. How does Dubai get cranes when the South Loop has them all?

1429401899_9a83dba8e3.jpg

More condos!

The El and the Sears Tower

1429401915_195eb5928c.jpg

So the Mayor lives somewhere in the South Loop and is said to want to make it like the Gold Coast. He seems to get what he wants around here, so, come buy a condo before you can't afford one here.

1429410565_1431954faa.jpg

Great little modern structure but what is up with the Olde English typeface?

1429410569_b1a56c24ed.jpg

Great facade treatment, not open yet, don't know what this will be.

1429421119_279c1a1c0c.jpg

OK, they are making condos in here, but I reaaaally don't approve of the crappy elevator addition. How did they get away with defacing a landmark?

1429421123_c4ac13c708.jpg

George must have been a cool dude.

Bottom of the Loop, I love this facade and sign

Monadnock Building and Sear Tower. Two of Chicago's finest.

Hotel Burnham. Read Devil in the White City to learn more about Daniel Burnham...

Wow, you don't see that at Walmart.

State Street, lots of construction, making a comeback.

New Icon on State, glass tower with huge retail component.

This building on State looks like it is from San Francisco.

New condos over the new home of the Joffrey Ballet on State Street

1429440095_2a01c941ea.jpg

Trump Tower. He is said to want to open the hotel part this fall, even though the tower is not complete. Why throw away revenue?

1429440103_ba2020c786.jpg

Somewhat respectful of the Wrigley Building. Lowered mass to continue the cornice before reaching for the heights.

1429440105_81a4d4244e.jpg

More new condos rising

1429440127_c46fb3190c.jpg

And more

1429448423_f18f3f71b8.jpg

and more

1429448439_9d5569b38b.jpg

and more.

The Ritz Carlton tower, 40% sold, to start soon.

Hey:

Feel free to post your own photos taken on trips to Chicago or if you live here! Where have you wandered? Where would you like me to wander (be nice)? If there is a project you are curious about, let me know, I will try and get there within a few days to get some photos for you.

GR guy (almost)

I used to live in Chicago and loved every minute of it! I almost hate that I moved away from such a great city but I have found myself at home in Charlotte and I would never have met my wife had I not moved. It is great to see such wonderful photos of Chicago as you have done!

OK, thanks Nitro. Printers Row area, just south of the Loop, still home to some publishing/book companies but increasingly seeing gentrification from the South Loop condo invasion. At the heart of this area is Dearborn Station, former train station, now renovated and home to shops and offices. Beautiful building and great area. Great suggestion.

And a block away, every spare lot is being developed into condos

1465530276_fe1676f269.jpg

And every vacant building is getting re-used. All in the shadow of the Sears Tower

1465530274_a15ac57ff9.jpg

And then more wandering...here is the entrance to either Upper Wacker (the one everyone knows) or Lower Wacker (an entire system of streets, open to the public under the existing streets). It can save time for those who know where to get on and off. It is also the setting for Batman, filmed last summer. Very "dark" looking subterranian environment.

Some more new condo buildings just North and South of the River (within blocks of Michigan Avenue and the new Spire Tower construction site - soon to be North America's tallest)

1465524958_a11a710da1.jpg

Street signs are calling this area "Chicago's New East Side". This whole area was industrial and prior to that was water! The ground here is all landfill from the Great Fire. They simply bulldozed the rubble into Lake Michigan and formed many new blocks of city.

1465518704_5e780aae32.jpg

Another new East Side tower under construction. Can't wait to see this one's skin.

Very interesting condo, they bought the air rights over the adjoining Pritzker Military Museum

Maybe the museum has closed? I hope they save the mural, looks like a Richard Haas.

So many new buildings, hard to keep up. Nice problem to have.

New 600 N. Lake Shore twin towers. Yow. What a location, right on the water.

Get yourself a corner living room, overlooking the Lake and skyline.

Great photo thread GRGuy! I got a tour of this Lakeshore East complex when I was there in February 2006. Looks a lot nicer in the Summer then in February! :shades: They were also going to build a school in the project as well. Crazy.

This building is unbelievable! Any more info on it? Where is it located?

This condo tower is at 510 West Erie at the corner of Kingsbury, right where Erie dead ends into the river. I had never been to this part of the river before, there is a great park, seating...a very enticing little section of town.

This building was designed by Lucien LaGrange, who also is the architect for the new Ritz residences in a photo above (the one that is 40% sold and will keep the nice historic corner building).

I talked with a resident sitting in front of the building. He said there are rentals and condos in the building. You could rent a little pied de'terre (sp?), Dadoff.

Dang, I wish I would have realized that. I was in town for the day yesterday and walked right past this site. I didn't really pay attention to what it was. I'll be back in Chicago for Greenbuild the first of November so I'll go inspect it further.

I noticed something strange while observing Trump Tower. The curtain wall and glazing system they used looks weird. It looks as if the entire building is coated in a thin shell of plastic, like grandma's old couch. I don't know what it is but it has a strange effect on the building.

By the way, does anyone know, was that a di Suvero sculpture I passed in Millennium Park? It looked just like a di Suvero.

How funny about your brother! Yes, the park is really pretty and a restaurant is still there, called Erie Cafe or something like that. I think they specialize in steak now.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm in Chicago on business and took the Architectural River Cruise on Sunday. Took tons of pictures, I'll post them when I get home. I apologize in advance for not having many comments with them - I don't remember what anything was! I have never seen Chicago from that perspective and was very impressed! What a great city!

North Pond restaurant, located in an old boat house on the lake in Lincoln Park. Anybody buying dinner? $$$$

Totally stumbled on this one today. The Chicago Cultural Center. Located across Michigan from Millenium Park. Block long building built in 1897. Was the library, now a center of arts open to all. Most stuff here is free and open to the public. The building is one of the most magnificent structures I have ever been in. Covered with Tiffany mosaics, glass ceilings and lighting. Breathtaking. Photos do not do it justice. Stop by when you are in town.
