I respectfully disagree with the notion that our military serves no other purpose than to kill people. The mere fact that we have ships like these, and men and women to operate them is a deterrent to acts of aggression around the world.

I would also add to this that in the best case scenario, these ships (among other equipment in our military) serve to PREVENT the killing of human life. If having a Navy ship parked offshore serves as a moment of pause for a nation or leader from a strike on human life and property, one could argue that they are instruments of peace.

A strong and visible defense can serve as the most peaceful offense.

The US military presence in the Middle East was, according to bin Laden himself, the single greatest motivator to his creation of al Qaida and the planning of the 9/11 attacks.

A strong and visible military presence in or near hostile territory will be perceived as a threat. Most people don't like being threatened, and many will look for a way to lash out at those behind the threat. Based on the track record of the War on Terror, it should be pretty clear by now that a military presence will do nothing to eliminate a terrorist threat, and will generally make that particular problem worse.

So, on 911, when all of the Americans were killed by Muslims who can find no "great" reason to hate us except for our gluttany, our indulgance, and our misrepresented passion for religion, those people should have been given a slap on the hand, and told, "good job, you got one on us!" The attack on America wasn't an isolated incident. The purpose was to start war. Did Osama think America would just sit back in our recliners and except over 3,000 needless deaths? No. He got exactly what he wanted. He got retaliation. And we have some metal from the building HE destroyed, so that hopefully, God willing, we can return the favor and destroy his warped and diluted mind. THEY began the war, not BUSH. That ship is made from the metal where mothers and fathers and daughters and children died and were entombed. That ship is a great thing, war or not.......people died within the walls of that metal, and by God respect they deserve.

I guess I get frustrated because it seems to me we are repeating all the mistakes of Vietnam again because even though 9-11 was committed by only 20 people. 20 people who figured out how to kill a lot of people in a single act, we have not managed to get into two wars over it, neither have any end in sight, and there are still so many who support it. The war on terror has become the new communists.
