Natchez

Something unfortunate in this location would have long-lasting repercussions.

That would really be unfortunate. I just dont know why the developers seem to be so hesitant on releasing any possible ideas for the design. Poydras LLC and Trump released somewhat vague plans for the design of the Trump Tower many weeks before the tower was even approved and the design was released, as the design was a concern to people in New Orleans, as the design of this building is to the people of Natchez. I'm hoping that the developers in Natchez will do the same thing.

As with the riverfront condo project, details are extremely sketchy at this point. I'm not sure I'd trust Mr. Cato to produce anything remarkable. I'm mostly hoping that whatever is built will at least not be too offensive.

The hotel project is getting closer to fruition. I had hoped for something much better than a Hampton Inn. Not all Hampton Inns are unattractive (the new one in downtown Memphis is actually fairly handsome), but I had hoped for something a bit more upmarket.

^They just built another Hampton Inn here in Covington near the interstate on hwy. 190, and I think it actually looks pretty nice.

I would have also hoped for something more upmarket for Natchez, but I'm sure this project will turn out to be a good one.

As with the rest of the new developments, the lack of renderings bothers me to no end.

Same here.

At points it seems worse wondering if the building will look bad than actually knowing it will look bad. At least thats how I feel sometimes when some developments arise in historic areas of New Orleans.

Secrecy in development is rarely a good thing. Of course, if the neighborhood association has teeth, this may not alwayts matter. I recall a new hotel built on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston which had to be substantially rebuilt because the developers lied about what they were building.

Adams County Has Signed an Agreement for an Industrial Park

According to the Natchez Democrat, Adams County has signed on a lease for the site of the former International Paper mill. I don't know exactly what this industrial park will amount to, but it would have to be good economic news for the area.

Work at Hotel Site In Progress

The site of a hotel planned neaqr the convention center is being evaluated by state archaeologists. It would add much interest to the project if the remains of the buildings once on the site could somehow be incorporated into the new building. Somehow, I doubt that this will be the case. Pecan Factory Demolition Approved

The Natchez Pecan Factory may be demolished for the construction of the Worley-Brown condominium complex on the riverfront. Final approval was granted today by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, so the project will proceed according to plan. There are still no public renderings of the condos...I'm beginning to worry. From the Natchez Democrat

Another Hotel

A developer whose plan for a hotel at the convention center was rejected wants to proceed ahead with a four storied Hampton Inn. What this wil mean for the other hotel project is unclear. If the otyher hotel is a Hilton Garden Inn, this would mean that the two hotels would likely work in tandem. I am concerned, however, that the hotel might not fit in the proposed location unless it is an unusually sensitive design. It's possible, but properties of this type usually involve older buildings- i.e Hampton Inn hotels in Charleston and Savannah. The architectural review board had better be tough with them. This Is What We Have Been Waiting For??

The hotel proposed for the site adjacent to the convention center may be a Country Inn and Suites. While the Carlson Corp. is certainly capable of producing a viable hotel, I am sorry to see that it will be one of their bottom-tier brands. I can't think of any one of these hotels which doesn't look like it fell off the expressway ramp. Natchez does not need a plastic hotel!. I hope this plan is torpedoed before it has the chance to advance further. Article from the Natchez Democrat

To set the record straight, I have just come across a Country Inn and Suites in New Orleans which manages to be halfway attractive. Of course, it's in a renovated warehouse building so the architecture is better than most of them. Even so, I don't hold too much hope for this idea. Couldn't it at least be a Sheraton?

St. Catherine Creek Project Revived?

A proposal to develop the St. Catherine Creek in a similar fashion to what is happening now at the Ross Barnett Reservoir in Jackson has been dormant for over 20 years. Now, the idea may once again be seeing the light of day. The creek runs past such areas as Jefferson College in Washington, the Natchez Trace and the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians. It will be interesting to see if this proposal proceeds further.

Hotel at Convention Center to Begin Construction by November 1

The builders of a hotel across the street from the convention center say they hope to begin construction by the 1st of November. I still haven't seen any renderings of the proposed hotel. I hope this won't be too awful. At only $10,000,000, this might be scraping by.

tomebarnes, do you know if the Briars will be kept secluded from the hotel that will replace the Ramada? I stayed there durring my visit to Natchez three years ago (after a visit to the Gulf Coast) and I think the atmosphere of the B&B would be ruined if one were to walk out the front door and see a hotel.

To the best of my knowledge, the Briars will remain apart from the new hotel. I too would hate to see its pleasant atmosphere ruined by a large casino. Having heard nothing in the way of concrete plans from Mr. Cato, I am left to wonder whether or not the project will go forward. As far as I know, the unfortunate Ramada has not yet been eradicated.
