Charles Cato Is Silent About Casino Project

Developer Charles Cato has been mostly silent about his plans for the Ramada Inn and the Briars. This recent article in the Natchez Democrat suggests that the hotel might be renovated does not portend a remarkable project. I had hoped this ugly piece of 1970's garbage might be permanently removed from its hilltop perch. The site truly deserves something much better. I hope that something good comes out of this, but I am doubtful at this point.

Hotel Should Break Ground Within 2 Weeks

The hotel being built near the riverfront should begin construction in about two weeks. I am still curious if this design is going to be out of the usual cardboad box. Country Inn & Suites has done a few projects which merit attention, but these have almost always been in places where local residents have insisted upon better design. I hope this will be the case here.

I had hoped for a better hotel than a Country Inn & Suites. Maybe there is still time for this to change. Supposedly, the Eola is in the midst of a renovation, but I doubt they will recruit much more of a flag than Holiday Inn to run the hotel once they are done.

Ramada Closes....Hooray

The Ramada Inn has closed its ugly doors at last. Most of the complex should be demolished, though there is a chance that the newer 3 story wing might be included in the new development planned for the site. I have no details yet about what this will be like.

Roth Hill Waterfront Proposals Involve Casinos

Two competing proposals for the Roth Hill site on the Natchez waterfront will be discussed on Monday. Both proposals involve casinos. The proposal from the Lane Company of Atlanta sounds more thorough, but I have not seen renderings of either one. I will post more details as soon as I see them.

Development Proposals Reviewed in Closed Council Meeting

The Natchez City Council reviewed two competing projects for development of the riverfront today. Once again, the lack of renderings makes it difficult to assess the value of either proposal. I hope that detailed drawings will be released to the public in the near future.

More Casino Talk

Both proposals revolve around casinos. While the market cannot support a second casino at this point, the developers claim that they will reach out to other markets. I'm still doubtful that this is the best idea for Natchez, but I will refrain from judgment until I see a rendering.

A Profile of the Lane Company- Riverfront Developer

As noted previously, the Lane Company of Atlanta has been selected to develop the site at Roth Hill on the riverfront. Plans include a casino, hotel, condos and other amenities. I'm a bit concerned that their projected cost is too low (under $50 m), but this may change. In any event, as the developers of Atlantic Station and the new downtown renewal project in Hollywood, FL, I think this may have been a good choice. Renderings of their proposal would make ma happier.

Developers of Casino Pledge to Build Public Park

The Lane Company has pledged to build a park on the riverfront. Granted. part of this "park" will be a casino, but it's better to be hearing about green space being promoted by a casino developer than more pavement. Lane officials have also pledged to work in tandem with the city's planning department and incorporate their project into the complex of walking trails now under development on the riverfront.

Convention Center Hotel Construction to Start Monday

The Natchez Country Inn and Suites at River Center should be under construction by Monday. I still haven't seen a rendering of this thing. I'm almost afraid to go hunting for one for fear of what I'll find. I'm well aware that the Country Inn developed by the same group in New Orleans is not offensive, so I'll hope for the best.

Pecan Factory Demolished

Mayor Philip West ordered the old Natchez Pecan Factory demolished Thursday morning. In spite of a cease and desist order issued by the State Department of Archives and History, the building was gone by Thursday afternoon. I am not especially saddened by the loss of this building, but I am nervous that the proposed condominium buildings on the site will not be appropriate. I wish someone would publish renderings of them somewhere- anywhere. While the project could possibly be a good development fo Natchez, I remain highly skeptical of the project at this point.

Lane Company's Initial Plan Approved

The initial plan for a large casino/hotel/park development on Roth Hill was approved by the state gaming commission today. It will be at least a couple of months before the Lane Company returns with specific plans in hand. I will be very interested to see what this plan will look like. The potential is tremendous, but so are the possible pitfalls.

Ground Broken for New Hotel

Site work has begun for an 80 room Hampton Inn near the riverfront in Natchez. While I am very disappointed to learn that this property will not be substantially different from other Hampton Inns, the new hotel rooms are certainly needed. There has also been a recent improvement in the general quality of the product offered by the chain. As noted in the article, access to the Hilton reservations system will definitely be a big plus for the hotel. The hotel should be open in the spring of 2008.

Cato Moves Forward With Emerald Star Project

Site approval has been granted for the project, but not completely. The city council needs to see more of the plans and have a few more questions answered before they grant unconditional approval for the plans. Demolition of the former hotel, however, is proceeding. I have still seen nothing in the way of renderings of the completed project. I hope this will be more than a cheap casino. Natchez deserves more than a low-rolling casino barn on this site.
