2 Billion Dollar Casino-Resort for Muskegon

Here's the total "vision":

# A 91,000-square-foot, standalone casino that would be about half the size of the 210,000-square-foot Soaring Eagle Indian casino in Mount Pleasant.

# Some 7,000 hotel rooms adjacent to the development. Muskegon County has 2,000 hotel rooms today.

# A 300,000-square-foot convention center and meeting space on the present Mart Dock property. The DeVos Place convention center in Grand Rapids has 250,000 square feet of space.

# Two indoor water parks, one associated with a 2,800-room hotel in a Victorian lumbering theme east of the current Shoreline Inn & Suites and another on the Mart Dock with 1,400-room "wilderness lodge" hotel. Lynn said Mart Dock owners are aware of his group's plans for their property but no agreements have been discussed.

# Two 15-story residential condominium towers on the old MichCon gas company property along Shoreline Drive

Downtown GR better step it up!

I guess I need to learn a little more about what the rules are. Sounds like... organize a "recognized" tribe, acquire land for said tribe, make interesting deal with developer who handles/pays all legal and political issues... build another casino and turn around a struggling municipality.

I am not a Muskegon fan, and have never had much of a reason to go or get excited about it. However it has so much potential and maybe this project could put it back on the map. It has nice beaches, camping, and so forth, but the city proper doesn't really seem to add or draw in regards.

If done right, wow, watch out! But again - it just seems like such a strech... but again, I am also extremely ignorant on how this can go forward.

As for urban competition for GR, the convention center idea bothers me more than the casino. But I realize the hotels need the 1 2 punch. (7,000 rooms though... no way, never - that's the equavalent of 2 Venetians in Vegas, or 10 Amway GPs, including the Paintlind portion)

I'm of the mindset that they are loading up this development with a lot of other "amenities" to make it more exciting and more likely to get approved. I think a casino in downtown Muskegon has been tried more than once, and the community has soundly said NO every time. Maybe a Muskegonite can weigh in on this.

Meh. Keep in Muskegon. Downtown GR doesn't need a casino. Muskegon is close so if Grand Rapids residents want to gamble they can easily do so without plopping a casino here. It seems like their projections for hotel rooms and other development are a bit unrealistic, but if they can pull it all together then good for them.

Scratch my earlier statement. Apparently Muskegon voters OK'd the idea of a casino downtown back in 2003.

I've always said the Muskegon shoreline has great potential. It's the largest inland lake with a connection to Lake Michigan, and easily within a day's boat trip from Chicago.

As far as affecting Grand Rapids, like the Wayland casino, I don't see the casino hurting the GR area that much. The other "resort" features might though. Grand Rapids virtually empties out on Summer weekends due to people heading to the lakeshore or up north, and more destinations outside of Grand Rapids won't help.

The Shoreline in Muskegon is very rich for re-developments. Did Rooks know something was about to turn in Muskegon and therefor decided to bring his condo twist to that town? I am just amazed at the scale of this investment!! This reminds me of the Duane Faust scenario in GR (2 Billion $$$)
