After months of rumors, MTV Networks announced that it plans a cable TV network aimed at gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered viewers.

LOGO is scheduled to launch in February 2005. MTV is a division of Viacom.

So far, Time Warner and a smaller cable company, RCN, have signed on to distribute the network. New Jersey-based RCN has a small number of subscribers in the Atlanta area. LOGO has not signed Comcast, the primary cable operator in Atlanta.

The network is acquiring movies, such as "Gods and Monsters" and "Cabaret," and creating original programming. A spokesman said there will be specials and documentaries on subjects such as the history of gays and lesbians on television.

The biggest challenge in launching a new TV network is getting significant distribution. Many young networks are fighting for limited space on the cable dial.
