Streets and Streetscapes

Eleven downtown Montgomery streets will be converted from one-way to two-way over the next few years. After the conversions are completed, all the downtown streets will be two-way except Union and Decatur. Work on the first conversion, Washington St., will begin by December and will take six months to a year to complete.

This is great news! These two-way conversions will help increase pedestrian traffic and improve street life, and will improve access to downtown businesses.

Does this include ALL one-way streets downtown? Including Jefferson/Columbus and Clay/Herron which feed into two way streets? Has there been any commentary from the Garden District since the changes would have to extend through their neighborhods.

I'm not sure about Jefferson/Columbus, but I believe that Clay and Herron will go to two-way. Mayor Bright once made a comment about people getting to see the great view of the city from Clay St., which can't be seen now because it's one-way out of town. I'll look again at the downtown master plan and see what was recommended.

According to the WSFA story linked above, all the one-way streets will be converted to two-way, except for Decatur and Union -- going along with the recommendations of the downtown master plan. On the map below it looks like small portions of Columbus and Jefferson may remain one-way where they merge.

Work is beginning today on a roundabout at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Ripley Street. Workers will also resurface part of the street, and the segment of Washington Ave from Jackson Street to Union Street will be converted to two-way.

The work is part of a four-month project that will affect four blocks on both Washington and Adams avenues. The project includes resurfacing the two streets from Jackson Street to Decatur Street and adding two roundabouts on Washington and possibly roundabouts on Adams as well.

The city has begun work on the planned Bell Street streetscape improvements. Bell St. will be widened to two lanes in each direction west of the CSX bridge and include a median with greenery, new sidewalks and lighting. The remainder of the Riverside Heights housing project will be demolished and the property will be available for the proposed Wright Brothers Museum and future development. The project should be completed by late 2010.

Maxwell Air Force Base built a new fence and the old concrete wall, as seen in the photos below, will come down as part of the project. It's great to see the city improve the connection from the AFB to downtown. Bell St. had deteriorated into a real armpit and was decades past the need for major improvement.

Hopefully the improvements will eventually extend east of the I-65 overpass into downtown.

Four major streetscape improvement projects should be completed by summer. Projects in the works include Madison, Bell St. (now Maxwell Blvd.), Mt. Meigs and Perry Hill Rd. The city is utilizing federal stimulus funds and matching funds to get this done.

The Dexter Avenue streetscape project is underway and partially complete up the north side of the street. Streetscaping will include new sidewalks, improved lighting, street trees, green space, improved crosswalks, and other features to make it more pedestrian friendly. Street paving will include a raised median similar to the one on Commerce Street and is planned to accomodate a future streetcar route.

The project is expected to be finished by January 2015, to be ready for the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march.
