Pipe mill expansion expected to nearly double work force

Construction has started on a $60 million expansion at the Stupp Bros. pipe mill in north Baton Rouge, a project that is expected to nearly double the number of employees. The mill is adding a spiral weld facility, which will allow the plant to produce pipes with a larger diameter that can be used by the natural gas and oil industries. Plans are to hire 179 workers at the spiral weld facility, with an annual payroll of nearly $10 million, says Robert Turner, vice president of commercial sales for Stupp. There are about 200 workers at the pipe mill right now. The expansion is scheduled to open in early 2009. Stupp, which has been in Baton Rouge since 1952, is one of the leading manufacturers of custom line pipe for the transport of oil and natural gas.

"Gramercy sugar refinery groundbreaking scheduled

Groundbreaking is scheduled Feb. 3 in Gramercy for a sugar refinery that owners say will be able to produce a million tons of sugar per year. Louisiana Sugar Refining LLC says that's one of the highest capacities in the country. The corporation is a joint venture among Cargill, Imperial Sugar Company, and Sugar Growers and Refiners, Inc. — a cooperative representing eight mills and more than 700 Louisiana sugar growers. Imperial owns the current sugar refinery at Gramercy. Louisiana Sugar Refining says the project will create more than 500 construction jobs.
