Kent/Ottawa Transit service

2 posts in this topic

(Sorry, didn't mean to start a new thread! please move to the Transit discussion) As someone who has seen various transit system configurations across the country, I urge all of you to do whatever you can and are willing to do to push for a metropolitan-wide public transportation system. At least that portion of Ottawa County that is part of the metropolitan planning organization boundary (the area that GVMC covers for transportation planning) should be included with the GR metro portion of Kent County. Having even two (or more) separate transit operators trying to provide service for one metro area, at least one the size of GR, just complicates and makes more challenging coordination for planning and operating purposes.

Soon, there's going to be talk between Kent and Ottawa to provide transit for the eastern suburbs of Ottawa County. It's probably going to be a combination of Dial-a-ride and small buses. However, a lot of this talk is also in context with downtown commuters where dial-a-ride and buses will be a hard sell. Along side the study of expanding service should also be a real discussion of rail transit. This is one of the few and far between opportunities for the metro area to run with it.
