Providence is getting a marathon:

The marathon, which will be a qualifier for the 2009 Boston Marathon, will be on May 4. There will also be a half-marathon, a marathon relay and a 5K race, all part of the Cox Providence Rhode Races.

One of the charitable beneficiaries is the Brendan Doyle Recovery Fund, which benefits state trooper Brendan Doyle, son of Johnson & Wales All-American runner Bobby Doyle.

Excellent.

It replaces the much beloved Ocean State Marathon that used to run in on Veterans Day Weekend in mid-November. The course used to start at CCRI in Warwick - followed the bay through Pawtuxet - crossed through Edgewood - down Allens Avenue - around India Point - through Fox Point - up Blackstone - and finished down North Main to Kennedy Plaza. It was a nice course. Word has it that the race was denied permission to run through Warwick because of the conflict with church traffic.
