College promise could spread

A scaled-down version of the Kalamazoo Promise, which offers free college tuition for graduates of Kalamazoo Public Schools, may be headed to a school district near you.

But it won't be free, and it won't be available unless your schools have a certain percentage of poor children.

"Promise Zones" could be created in Grand Rapids, Godfrey Lee, Ionia, Kelloggsville, White Cloud and other districts under pending legislation.

I like it! However, I can just see the outcries from people calling this program unjust for the richer districts. Hey, maybe it will draw some people back to GRPS if the schools qualify.
