Re-envisioning Nicholson ...

LSU plans new housing, parking, shops

In five to six years, a trip down Nicholson Drive through the LSU campus could appear a bit different. Imagine a roundabout at the Burbank Drive intersection. And picture new student housing to replace the aging married student housing complex. Add to this a mixture of retail, garage parking and outdoor plazas.

These are some of the parts of a vision for a redeveloped Nicholson Drive corridor. The master plan project for the area — discussed during a public forum Tuesday evening at LSU — is being led by the university with the idea that public-private partnerships could be established for the actual build-out.

Yeah and the west side looks good too! Enjoying the ride of LSU Football being an elite program!

Athletics bailout is appreciated, but embarrassing

Welcome to LSU, where the value of your education is determined by the football team’s success.

That great professor recruited from an Ivy League school? You can thank quarterback Zach Mettenberger for him. The new beakers in your chemistry lab? Props to defensive end Sam Montgomery for those. Don’t forget about the money you now have to do research overseas, courtesy of wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

A decision made Friday by the LSU System Board of Supervisors after the University has been marred by years of budget cuts made the above conversation possible. The Annual Transfer Fund Policy forces the LSU Athletics Department to fork over $7.2 million to the University annually, plus a percentage of surplus money.

The University set the precedent for the transfer this year when the Athletics Department contributed $5.5 million to help offset budget cuts. Interim System President and Chancellor William “Bill” Jenkins said the continued donations from LSU Athletics would give the University “discretionary” income. It’s likely the first round of money would go toward faculty raises, which have not happened in five years.

That reveille article, like most of their content, is a joke.

Athletics make things happen at LSU. When you come to terms with that, you'll be able to appreciate the benefits of having a cash cow like that associated with the school. This directly translates to a better quality experience for students.

LSU is one of only a handful of fully self sustaining athletics programs in the nation- and they voluntarily give back to support academics and research in ways that that wouldn't be possible without an economic boom and a significant tuition hike. This is a unique advantage that many of LSU's peer institutions can't exploit.

Black only colleges = racism

Itsjustme2.....there is no such animal as a "Black Only College". There is a such thing as a Historically Black College. Due to the segregationist policies during the Jim Crow years in the U.S.A., universities such as LSU, NC State (from which I am a graduate), and many others did not allow blacks the opportunity to attend....thus these were "White Only Colleges". HBCUs were originally established by various churches and other organizations as a means to provide higher education to blacks. These colleges provided a means for empowering the Black population in America to become independent and establish a conduit for the black community to move from slavery, illiteracy, and dependence to freedom, education, and self sufficiency.

Once segregation was declared unconstitutional, Black Americans still faced resistance, discrimination, and obstacles in trying to gain admittance to the HWCUs. So, even during this time when the Supreme Court was forcing the historically white only schools to admit black students, the HBCUs were still providing a conduit to build and empower the growing black middle class.

HBCUs provide the same opportunities to people of all cultures just as the HWCUs do. Just as the culture of LSU is dominated by majority population of students in attendance and its history.... Southern University's culture is dominated by its majority population and its history.

Black only colleges = racism

HBCUs were used as a tool to undermine systemic racism. They are arguably dinosaurs today, thus the better HBCUs have branched out into a number of different segments and found a niche for their core competency in the higher ed marketplace.

SUNO is not an example of a functional institution by any stretch of the imagination. What I find disgusting is that places like SUNO is run by people who should have an understanding of how a corrupt system can hurt disadvantaged minorities- yet they remain open, with single digit graduation rates, providing useless degrees and plenty of debt for those that make it.

The Jindal administration worked pretty hard to merge SUNO with UNO (which is a pretty competitive school)...and was met with fierce opposition by the black caucus, who seem to think it's still 1965. The reality is that SUNO isn't providing good results, and being an HBCU shouldn't entitle any institution to a free ride. Their graduation rates and brand equity is pathetic. They are providing a disservice to their own students.

It was him who initiated over $200 million in budget cuts. That's not they way to the top.

Same old tired argument....and more proof that America isn't ready for fiscal sanity.

The state can't print money. Unkike the feds (or California), it has to be responsible and balance its budget- this while facing massive increases in Medicaid reimbursements demanded by the federal government from state coffers.

This may look strange to many....but this is what we call "responsibility".

There are too many higher ed institutions that can't pull their own weight. A certain faction would prefer block any cuts or changes to their failed cash cow while blasting the state for having to make cuts across the board. Even the usually uninformed state voters saw through that hypocrisy by showing record support for the incumbent.
