Alstom officials said the project will include putting 250,000 square feet under roof for construction of steam turbines, gas turbines and generators.

It will take about two and a half years to complete the plant, which officials said will be a "showplace'.

The need for the plant was spurred by high U.S. demand for new power facilities that will be carbon free.

Mayor Ron Littlefield said Alstom officials have committee to beautifying the facility from the river. The Tennessee Riverwalk is expected to be extended through the property, which is across from the new national park on historic Moccasin Bend.
