Yes...the first design the Monsoon posted was actually the design that was to be built, and KPF was the architect.

The second design (with the detailed plaza) was designed by TVS of Atlanta. They were fired, and replaced by KPF, which then penned the space-ship looking design.

Of interesting note, the original design by TVS did end up getting built, just not in Charlotte. It was completed last year in a 35-story version as the HQ for Retirement Systems of Alabama in Mobile.....also, Wachovia has now gone back to TVS, and they are designing the current office building.

It took some digging, but this was from a news article in 1999.

Sources at Atlanta architecture firm Thompson, Ventulett Stainback & Associates, which First Union had also considered for the headquarters project, confirm that they are no longer involved and that KPF is designing the building.

Sources close to the project say KPF will present four options for the tower -- all reaching at least 100 stories -- to First Union Thursday. A 100-story tower would likely reach more than 1,300 feet, putting it among the nation's five tallest buildings and among the 10 tallest in the world.
