It won't be built if they lose funding. See Virginian-Pilot article here.

Ah, politics. Sure, officially, its a private institution. That's simply because the state hasn't officially bought it yet. The problem with the state buying the school is that the hospital is privately owned and not School owned. Then what do they do? Build another hospital?

The school would have been public had the state seen the need to support it before it was constructed in the 70s. Unfortunately, as is all too often, our politicians cannot seem to see trends before it is too late.

Either way, Im pretty sure the funds will be delivered.

Just got this email from EVMS President, Harry Lester:

Great news! Today the House/Senate Conference Committee agreed to include EVMS in the Higher Ed Bond package for $59 million for a new building! Thanks to all of you for your support during the last few months as we made our case with the General Assembly. Special thanks to Governor Kaine who put EVMS in the original package.

So the plans are a go.

Does anyone know what exactly is going here, the construction seems to be going very slow. Im mostly interested in how big/tall this structure will be? I'm glad to see EVMS expand. The only rendering I've seen shows new construction on a different lot than whats actually taking place. confused?

The active construction is definitely an extension of the existing parking garage, connecting to both SNGH and CHKD, across from the CHKD ER.

Its a bit of a shame, yes, that that land is going to be a garage, but I argue for it being fairly necessary, unless they are to build everything more vertical in that area. I doubt the residents want that, so this is what happens. Im not sure if they plan to leave space for storefront on colley, but i doubt it. Just remember, they are building over a surface lot, not empty land.

I would also argue the most wasted prime pieces of real estate is colley ave itself. How many non-historic, one-story shoppes can they have. Tear some of those down and build 3 stories throughout the corridor. Get rid of 7-11, surface lots, extend shoppes across traintracks to now defunct colley bike shop and velvet...the area that they are building the garage is more of a thoroughfare without much pedestrian traffic...the stores dont start for another 3 blocks.
