Update: According to the Director of Athletics at TSU, this project is waiting on  final approval from the State. 

Is it me or does it seem like it takes the State a long time to approve the simplest of projects?  This project really doesn't involve a great amount of construction.  The existing covered outdoor basketball pavilion will be enclosed and small additions will be added on each end.  I know electrical, HVAC and plumbing comes into play along with  some other requirements, but this simply is not a major project

It is also my understanding that the State has reviewed the plans for the TSU Alumni Center and that they want it to be relocated from the planned site of 33rd & John Merritt Blvd to Schrader Lane and Ed Temple Blvd.  Not sure why they want it relocated there, but it appears approval is contingent on that recommendation from what I'm hearing.

Well, lets keep an eye on the State legislature as they review Gov. Lee's proposed budget.  Within that budget is $250M for Tennessee State University to address infrastructure issues and repairs to existing buildings.  According to TSU's president, their additional monies allocated for new facilities.  Specifically $60M for a new engineering building.  She didn't provide a dollar figure, but apparently there is money for a new library, a new academic building and possibly another new dorm.

This is long overdue for TSU.  So, I hope the budget passes with as much of funds that Lee has proposed.

I know it's unusual to quote yourself, but I wasn't able to edit the above post.  I wanted to add that per a discussion with State Representative Harold Love, Jr., monies allocated in Governor Lee's budget for TSU more than likely will not be used for athletic facilities.  His statement came during a video call with  TSU's President and members of the TSU National Alumni Association.  I point this out because some people have asked the question could TSU use some of the money to fund a new on-campus football stadium.  The answer to that question appears to be no.  The reason being is that the State no longer provides funding for college and university athletic facilities.  There are loopholes in that ruling, but in general the State is not going to foot the bill for athletic only facilities.   The State has provided proportional funding when academic facilities are integrated into athletic facilities.  That is one of  the loopholes.  But they are still heavily scrutinized during the approval process.  I for one am okay with none of the money being used athletic facilities because there are significant maintenance issues with existing buildings on campus that have been deferred far too long due to poor funding and mismanagement.   And, I believe that the need for better housing and academic facilities will be the greater payoff for TSU long-term.   That being said, I wouldn't be opposed with TSU incorporating housing into the design of a new stadium to help defray cost.  Jacksonville State University in Alabama has a stadium that includes student housing with more being added (see photo below).  If such a solution could work for TSU, I hope it is explored as an option.  But the priority has to be improving existing structures and building new academic and research facilities.

It is astounding how different the entire block of 12th Ave s and wedgewood look from just a few years ago. Next to be developed in the smoothie king building I’m sure.
