^ "primary" is more then a stretch.

The only side you can even argue that point is the Trade St access, but on the plans and elevation renderings it clearly shows to the left and to the right street-level entry into the CGS and the retail to the left. 

Graham St, no stairs at all.

4th St, ramp or street level access to the garage.

Can you point to the rendering of your actual complaint?

Quite a few more trains are on the way (two in less than a year and two more the year after and possibly 10 or more beyond that if SEHSR ever gets traction). One of the many things delaying the arrival of additional intercity trains is the current Charlotte station.

Its also a near certainty that at some point in the future we will have commuter rail. Trains  from Rock Hill, Gastonia, Mooresville (maybe), Salisbury and (possibly) Monroe would all need Gateway Station. I honestly think what is being proposed is going to be insufficient for our future intercity and commuter service.

Another wild card is demand for trains to the South. Atlanta is starting to take things like commuter rail  seriously and the GA legislature is becoming slightly less intransigent, its not impossible that we will see 10+ trains a day to Atlanta in addition to what is mentioned above (although that would be 20 years in the future -- but certainly within the lifespan of Gateway Station)

Edit: only 2 of our trains are after midnight.

A primary reason for the streetcar is to tie Gateway to the Blue Line. The Silver Line / West corridor might, but their intown routing is still uncertain.

Slightly different subject, the coach service yard at Summit street is now fully formed. The yard entrance has been excavated and tracks are down beside both service platforms. It looks like there is just some drainage, tracklaying and cutting into the main left. Should easily be done before the February scheduled completion date.

(to review, the facility will allow for more passenger equipment storage in Charlotte which will allow the Carolinian (the train that departs at 7am for NYC) to be longer which will make it one of the few (one of two I believe) Amtrak trains outside of the NE Corridor to operate at a profit. That will be a big deal to the future of pax rail in NC. )

Unfortunately I am normally there at dusk (on my way to the arcade bar) so the photos I have are awfully washed out. I'll try to get some daytime shots when the entry tracks begin to go down.

I think that bridge-canopy design could end up being iconic if done right. 

Great find!

A few highlights:

  • Phase 1 (track / structures / signals and canopy / platform) appears to now be fully funded!
  • Approvals with partners are "nearing completion" (so far it looks like NS is being less intransigent than they were on the Red Line)
  • RFP for PPP Station development is expected to be released to developers this summer
  • CATS expects that development partners will fund station building development
  • Phase 1 will begin construction this summer. Scheduled completion is Summer 2022

I am confused by the two different platform canopy renderings (one is the wavy glass, the other is a big suspension concrete roof).

I see this as a positive sign.

The July 2017 initial document on CGS ( http://charlottenc.gov/cats/transit-planning/charlotte-gateway-station/Documents/CGS MSAP - Final Report.pdf ) states on page 10:

Quote

The plan provides an illustrative example of the application of the design principles, but is not intended to be a final
design proposal. However, the multi-phase development of CGS should adhere to the general design principles
established in this section.

With this update from Jan 8th (lol, I like how they dated it in the future) we see that phase 1a and 1b in focus and now the design is more refined and IMO more solid (for the canopy).

I think it is a positive sign only because I hope that with each phase the design and materials used get better.
