Rothbury Festival

I'm not going, but I somehow wound up with a living room full of ticket holders last night. They came from Ann Arbor, Iowa, North Carolina and Washington D. C., so it appears this thing has pretty widespread appeal.

Now I have to go restock my pantry, track down the cat that escaped during the visit, and run a load of abandoned clothing out to Goodwill. Hippies... God bless 'em.

After reading all the incredible reviews about Rothbury so far, I might have to set aside some of my vacation time next year to volunteer for this thing. 4 1/2 square miles of music, art and mind-blowing entertainment! AEG, the event coordinators, think that this year's estimated 40,000 total event-goers will double to 80,000 next year with all the positive feedback from event-goers, musicians, sponsors, etc..

One of the coolest things is that the Detroit media has been reporting and blogging non-stop on the event. Regulars to events like this such as Bonnaroo are saying Rothbury has blown them all away big time.

The Press also has non-stop blogging:

This aerial of the festival grounds is pretty cool:

And something about a 40' tall monkey sculpture.....

Travelled from Raleigh NC to Rothbury for the festivities....(I'm actually in GR as I write this, Ada to be exact) Hands down a far better experience than my Bonnaroo jaunts...Many people from around the country especially the southerners were commenting on how they never realized that Michigan has such amazing summers. It didnt hurt that every day the weather was SPECTACULAR! I was able to recommend several post festival points of interest to hit on their return trips including, of course, Downtown GR...and points along the coast. It's very true that words cannot express the true sense of community and comradarie (sp?) that I experienced. The mind is literally transformed (even without the aid of contraband) into another world...it speaks to a part of our being that is truly underserved in our culture, at least for the masses, a oneness and a brotherhood...a sense that we are all part of one world. I know is sounds hippy-dippy. I am the farthest thing from a hippy (but I am a huge Phish fan).

Rothbury had the organization and feel of a festival that had been going on for years. I heard some complaining about the 'upscale' facilities...a sense that they werent quite worth the expense....the amazing thing about the campgrounds is how much of the principals of traditional urban design are found in the sense that literally streets are formed with vendors of all sorts set up. You could literally purchase any variety of items before even making your way into the Festival grounds itself. It was a true CITY that was formed. It had housing, entertainment, commerce, music, a visual smorgasbord!!!. To me that was one of the most interesting things.

I am stilll sore and probably will be for days...all in all I figured that I walked the equivalent of a marathon...it was a huge endurance challenge...not for the faint of heart....but having been through it I cant help but feeling like a survivor...and part of history...something I will relish for the rest of my life...

Until next year!!!

I'm guessing they filed bankruptcy to get protection from the creditors. Sounds like a couple of them wanted the court to give them all the gross proceeds from the festival. Double J wants to use the festivals to get out of their financial troubles. My bet, the bankruptcy could will appoint a trustee who will help manage Double J for 2-3 years. Some creditors will be paid in full rather quickly, some will get paid in full over time, and some will take a discount to get paid quicker. The trustee does the negotiating. Eventually they come out of bankruptcy and life goes on. This is all on the assumption the trustee doesn't find more financial stuff that is too bad to work out.

There's an article in the Press today that they're very close to reaching a deal (in the DoubleJJ bankruptcy proceedings) to bring back Rothbury this year. Festival organizers have already been planning for the festival as if it's a sure thing, including the possibility of bringing in a reunited Phish, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, AC/DC and Coldplay this year. Coldplay would be HUGE.
