A new little shopping center is complete at the intersection of Sam Ridley and Weakley. I was kind of skeptical about them being able to find tenants. But a furniture rental store (can't remember the name is open) and a wine and liquor store is preparing a space as well as a new Gyro restaurant. These small steps really give me hope that things are improving. I wish them success.

A few years ago there was a drvie thru coffee place beside the Shell Station across from Kroger's on Sam Ridley. It was in an odd location. Well, it has been torn down and a brand new "Waffle House" is being built. There is a new strip center near Lowe's. I think it is in front of the lot where Penny's was going to be built. It has a Dental Office in it. The Whitt's is open. It's down near Weakley Lane. There is a new Mattress Place in front of Target. And another building that I think is one of those quick medical places. Things are slowly filling up. I hope the Penny's center gets back on track.

I left off one thing. The company I work for, Schneider Electric (Square D Co) on Weakley Lane, is building a large solar field next to the plant. It is quite impressive. It's not huge by any standard. But it will supply 60% of the facilities needs and sell back to the power company on weekends when the plant is lightly used. I know of no other place in the area doing anything like this. I believe they have set July 25 as the start-up date. They are also putting in chargers for electric vehicles in the parking lot. Four total I think. No one here has one yet, but they are preparing for it. Just a little bragging.

So the JC Penney's and Best Buy project are dead at the moment?

Yes, the sign that was there was taken down a few years ago.

Dedicated a few days ago. TN 3rd 1MW solar farm. It is quite impressive. I of course am biased, because I work here. Here is the report from the Tennessean.

It seems very expensive. But our plant manager said we built a Ferrari when a Volkswagon would do. The dual voltage 600V and 1000V cost an additional $2,000,000. USA uses 600V and most of the rest of the world uses 1000V. It also is designed to allow portions to be used for experimenting and lab use, to allow us to understand how to use it most effectively. I am not an electrical engineer, so I am not the right person to try to explain. Our company, which is global and we export product from here. As you can see I am very proud of the company for putting out this much money (with help of the government). We need to use the energy we currently consume more effectively and make use of alternate energy sources. The more this is used and the more companies joining in to make the parts needed will drive down costs by more competition. I know that a lot of folks don't like the government give aways, but I think in many instances, it does help alot. Manufacturers like Nissan and ours will perhaps make the Smyrna area a good area for start-ups to join in.

Anyone know what is going in behind the county clerks office, off Weakly Lane? They have bulldozed all the trees and leveled (it was already pretty level) a few large lots. No sign of construction yet. The Catfish house site is moving along quickly and the Red Robin has been razed and looks like they are wasting no time putting in the Longhorn restaurant. Can't wait for a Panera Bread.

The new building for the Long Horn is under construction and the other site that Nashrugger said will have a Panera is also under construction. I was at the Wendy's at lunch today and noticed that the area behind Wendy's is being prepped for construction. I asked the manager at the Wendy's what was going on. He said they are building a Sports Authority. The lot looks like it could hold more than that. I wish they would put up coming soon signs. I hate not knowing what is going on. I know it's just chain stores, but with Hickory Hollow losing so many stores, folks around here have to go to Murfreesboro or Mt Juliet for any decent stores. Maybe the proposed Penny's shopping center near Lowes that never got built will be resurrected. Then I will start beotchin about the traffic.

Panera is open. The drive thru is a rediculous idea. They are simply not that fast. The Long Horn is open or very close to opening. Sports Authority has there walls up and is well underway to completion. There is another building beside Panera that is approaching completion, but there are no "coming soon" signs in front. These all give me a positive feeling that maybe the economy is improving slowly, but still it is improving.

I thought of that as well and tried to find the store on there website. It is not on there web site yet and did not see anyway to preorder at existing stores. I was working in the yard and was pretty filthy and did not want to go inside. Waited thru 3 songs on the radio and the line did not move. I left and went to Sonic.

I wonder why the chains have not built on the other side of Sam Ridley. All the shopping, restaurants and movie theater are on that side, which would be very convenient and walkable. The O'Charley's side has 6 or 7 motels and 3 restaurants and I would not walk from those to the other side of the interstate. I'd hop in the car. No sidewalks and 4 lanes of traffic. It seemed a missed opportunity. We get plenty of guests at our facility from foreign country's and they must be escorted which can get to be pain after a few weeks.
