Downtown updates

I was in DWSP today talking to Jason Thiel and he stated that their offices would be moving to the second floor of the Chatham Building (former Walter Robbs & Callahan space) along with the Arts Council. He believes they already have a tenant in mind for their old space.

Huggins Shoe Repair on Fourth will be closing. I can't say it surprises me as nobody goes downtown to buy shoes these days. I feel very sorry for the elderly couple who owns this store.

Hey guys, I'm planning to be in downtown Winston-Salem over the weekend. Are there any spots I shouldn't miss? I'm going to check out Old Salem, but I also want to explore the main part of downtown. I DL-ed the retail map from the DWSP and it looks like the area around Trade and 4th is a good spot to walk. I'm looking for bar, shops, music, and restaurant ideas, mainly. I'd like to find enough to do and explore so I don't have to drive much, if at all. Thanks!

You should check out Christopher's on Brookstown Ave at the corner of Broad Street. It's arguably the best restaurant in W-S and they have a great patio that usually has live music. There are great shops along Trade from 5th to 8th.

Shoot, I wish I knew you were going....I stumbled onto their Mellow Mushroom one day while passing through..its much cooler than ours I must say...just another block west of 4th and Trade.

Bib's downtown will be coming to the Doo-Wop shops.

"Bib's" - an old school rib joint

-menu includes ribs, chicken, turkey and beef briskets slow-cooked on huge smoker with special sauces, rubs, and sides

-renovation is almost done with opening set for mid-late October

-hours are Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m.

Bruegger's and Dilworth Coffeehouse has temporarily closed for "remodeling and rebrand focusing." the owners hopes to reopen the restaurant ASAP.

4th St. Studio Barber Shop will soon offer jazz and comedy. The first comedy show at 628 W. Fourth St. is scheduled for Oct. 10, followed by a jazz show on Oct. 30. Owner Kevin Gilchrest, is a NY native and wants to be a part of downtown's growing nightlife.

"He plans to use local talent, including Sonya Henderson, the Wake Forest Jazz Band, the Sunset Group and individual musicians from the N.C. School of the Arts.

He added comedy because there is a lack of comedy venues in Winston-Salem, he said."

I haven't seen this posted here, but looking at Sweet Potatoes website today, they announced on the Cotton Mill Restaurant Link that due to the economic downturn it has closed.

Thats old new The owners of Sweat Potatoes closed The Cotton Mill Restaurant, but has opened again under new management with the same name.

The Cotton Mill Restaurant located at the Brookstown Mill has reopened under new management. Steven Butcher, formerly the general manager at the Twin City Chop House, took over the restaurant in late September. The Cotton Mill was previously opened and operated by Stephanie Tyson and Vivian Joyner of Sweet Potatoes in the fall of 2007. They closed the in July 2008.

Kernel Kustard will be opening on 4th street in the former bagel/coffee shop in the Nissen building. Along with the frozen custard and popcorn, they will be adding, hotdogs, hamburgers and other sandwiches to the downtown menu.

If you want your ideas on the future of downtown to be heard, now is the time to do it. The recession has caused DWSP to solicit ideas on how downtown should be developed, what buildings should look like, and what retail is needed.

The meeting is at 8:30am, Tuesday at the New Worship Center at First Presbyterian Church, 200 N. Cherry St.

Yes, it no longer appears dirty or sleazy, in my opinion.

It appears renovations have begun on the retail space at the corner of Fourth and Poplar. Any ideas on what's coming?

Ive always felt that Bon Apetite was not worthy of such a beautiful space. Im gald they chose to make improvements.

Also, Ive always wondered what the O'Hanlons building was used for. does anyone use the upper floors?

there are many different firms and offices in the O'Hanlon building...I have been in there and they are actually very nice offices inside

Thanks. It always looked empty or half-used to me.

WS/FCS has a 3-story addition, with 1,475 sf of retail spac, planned for Trade St. for the Downtown Elementary School in the Arts District. Also, they want to build a playground on 7th and Cherry. Small project but it takes away two surface lots!
