I checked the unemployment rate for my county at the Bureau of Labor Statistics website. The unemployment rate for my county in March 2004 was 8.3%!!! The average from January 2003 to March 2004 was 9.575%, peaking at 10.8%!!! It's probably even higher because for instance, I'm desperately looking for a job, but I've never applied for unemployment insurance so I don't think I'm counted in that number.

I've applied to more than 25 entry-level jobs and I haven't been given a single interview. I want to move out of the area, but I can't do that until I get a job here to save up some money for the move.

I'm glad I don't live in Yuma, AZ though. I feel sorry for those people.

^Why is it not much of a surprise?

I missed this one earlier. South Florida has never been known as a great job market. Vast areas are poverty stricken, and there's the language/immigration issue that I think keeps big companies away. A big portion of jobs in Dade County were in manufacturing and like elsewhere in the US, they're dissapearing.

Michigan went from 48th in May to 47th in June. Not that helps me any...I'm still unemployed. The unemployment rate in my county is 8.5%. I even went south into the next county looking for a job, but no luck there either .

PA is really two different states now...The west which is in horrible conditions economically, and the east which is experiencing a boom.

I live in the Harrisburg area and we have very low unemployment, as a matter of fact -- my county, Cumberland, just west of Harrisburg has the lowest unemployment in the state at 2.9%! This county encompasses Harrisburg's most populated suburbs. Tons of homes going up in this area as well. The difference from this area and on the other side of the Appalachians is astonishing.

Nice to see Atlanta and Georgia are both doing very well in the jobs market. Lots of new jobs being created around here, but a lot of others being lost at the same time in other sectors so our unemployment rate has been pretty steady. Still 4.0 percent is pretty good. Plus the quality of the jobs is increasing.

Hopefully as the national trend continues towards an improved economy over the next few months, things will continue to improve.

Also on a note on Atlanta and GA in generally, I would like to see more investment in non-Atlanta area cities like Savannah and Macon, two areas hit very hard by the energies and mfg layoffs.

I wonder what the explanation for Yuma, AZ is. :sly:

It's also interesting to note that unemployment does not mean lower wealth, and vice versa - on the states list North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska all rank high on the low unemployment rate list probably due to stable agricultural jobs there. And IMO in many ways, steady and stable is better than rich with a select few left behind, so kudos to these Plains states. :D
