Alabama Connection to Appalachian Trail

The official opening of the Pinhoti Trail's connection to the Appalachian Trail will be held this Sunday. Proponents hope to eventually get the Alabama extension recognized as the official southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, which would require an act of Congress. An Alabama extension was proposed at the founding meeting of the Appalachian Trail Conference in the 1920s, but work didn't begin until the 1980s. The Pinhoti Trail will eventually be extended to Coosa County's Flagg Mountain, the southernmost mountain of the Appalachians.

The Pinhoti Trail made the national press with a recent Associated Press story. Though some trail officials doubt that the effort will be successful, Alabama supporters of the trail extension are determined to pursue the long-term goal of making the Pinhoti officially part of the Appalachian Trail.
