The Indy Racing League and Champ Car World Series signed a deal to unify the two open-wheel racing circuits, with Champ Car assets becoming part of the IRL. American open-wheel racing has lost a lot of prestige over the past decade or more, with the IRL and Champ Car/CART split, and NASCAR gaining significant ground in areas that used to be dominated by the sport.

It's going to be a huge climb for open wheel racing even with the merger. Years of infighting, bickering, bad marketing, public relations and the popularity of NASCAR is going to make it awefully tough on the IRL to even compete.

Danica Patrick finally wins her first race.

The only thing keeping open wheel racing in the news is Danica Patrick and now that she finally won a race much of the news coverage of the series will fall off. The only reason why I say that is because over the last few years all you heard is when is she going to win and now that she has I just don't see people being as interested in the sport.

The Indy Racing League, better known as IRL, is the sanctioning body of a predominantly American based open-wheel racing series. The League consists of two series, the premier IndyCar Series in DIRECTV HD (usually considered synonymous with the Indy Racing League), whose centerpiece is the Indianapolis 500, and Firestone Indy Lights, the official developmental series of the Indy Racing League.
