I'm talking percentage wise ok lets break it down, also Canada adds Arabs/middle easterners as minorities in the US they are considered white:

City Pop: 2,456,805

Asian: 675,310 or 27.5%

Black: 204,075 or 8.3%

Latin American: 54,350 or 2.2%

Aboriginal: 11,370 or 0.4%

Visible minority, n.i.e: 37,985 or 1.5%

-------

Multiple visible minorities: 19,855 or 0.8%

White...all else... now do you see what i mean try comparing it to some US cities especially from the west and you will see that Toronto is not as racially diverse as i had mentioned earlier its Whites then Asians and everything else is pretty small percentage wise. Also asn an FYI, please do not confuse racial diversity with ethnic diversity those are two different things.

I still don't agree with you that Toronto isn't racially diverse. Hispanic isn't even a race. Toronto may have a lot more Asians than Blacks, but that's because Toronto's population is reflective of the world's, and there are a lot more Asians than Blacks in the world as a whole.

Sacramento too, is a bit of an anomaly. Most major American cities do have a racial majority, be it black or white (I doubt any have an Asian majority).

^No actually its not an anomoly there are quite a few US that are an exception to the norm compared to just "one" city in Canada. Again i think you may not be looking at the big picture Toronto is not really that racially diverse but it is ethnically diverse and those are two different things the latter is a better measure of diversity....

And yes there are cities in the US where Asians are a majority Honolulu is one of them and there are others in the Western US like that... in honestly outside of NYC the most diverse cities in the US are in the West. Because not only do the draw lots of people from every region of the world they are also a big draw for Pacific islanders the one race and hundreds of ethnic groups that Canada, Toronto etc can not even compete with.... but the US West has and the US West has all that Canada has and MORE!

G W North, correct Hispanic/Latino is not a race and the US census points that out cause they can be of "Any race" also Canada counts Arabs as minorities in the US they are counted as Whites. ;) BTW where do you think Hispanics and Latinos are counted in Canada? They are included in the category "Latin Americans" so even Canada categorizes them.

Okay a variety....

Oakland, CA

Black or African American: 35.7%

Hispanic or Latino: 21.9%

Asian: 15.2%

Some other race: 11.7%

American Indian and Alaska Native: 0.7%

Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander: 0.5%

Two or more races: 5.0%

NYC:

White: 44.7%

Hispanic or Latino: 27%

Black or African American: 26.6%

Some other race: 13.4%

Asian: 9.8%

American Indian and Alaska Native: 0.5%

Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander: 0.1%

Two or more races: 4.9%

Culver City:

White: 59.2%

Hispanic or Latino: 23.7%

Black or African American: 12%

Asian: 12%

Some other race: 10.2%

American Indian and Alaska Native: 0.7%

Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander: 0.2%

Two or more races: 5.7%

Daly City:

Hispanic or Latino: 25.4%

Asian: 13.6%

Some other race: 12.4%

Black or African American: 7.9%

American Indian and Alaska Native: 0.6%

Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander: 0.5%

^I highly doubt that it could compete with LA or the Bay Area. Do you seriously think that Toronto is the only place that recieves immigrants from all over the world? Please dont tell me you'd actually believe that cause you'd be dead wrong.

Okay the entire nation of Canada in 2001 had foreign born people from about 200 different places of origin, but Canada also includes Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, etc as their foreign born but in the US they are not counted as foreign born.

In 2002 LA-Long Beach recieved immigrants from over 181+ countries nearly as many places of origin in a one year period without counting US Territories as the entire country of Canada did over a long period of time.

Toronto can compete with any city in California. In how many Californian cities do immigrants comprise more than half the population? I'm pretty sure it's none. The only major American city I know of where there are more immigrants than not is Miami.

I'm not saying Toronto is the most racially diverse city in the world, but you can't say it's not racially diverse when more than 1 million people (just in the city, never mind the suburbs) are non-white.

^and your going by 2000 stats 4yrs have gone by California also recieves more immigrants then all of Canada per year and where do they go mainly to the major metro's and it does not include illegals. LA already takes the cake in many area's too besides having the largest Mexican population outside of Mexico City it also has the largest Korean, Iranian, Filipino, outside of their home countries, 2nd largest Japanese population outside of Japan, Los Angeles claims the second largest concentrations of Salvadorans and Guatemalans in the world, largest Indonesian community and the largest Danish settlement in the United States, largest Samoan population of all US metros, largest Taiwanese population in North America, largest Belizean population in the US, etc etc

again i never said Toronto isnt diverse, i've made mention that it is "ethnically diverse" and that is different from "racial diversity" which is the original topic. There are many cities in the US that are racially diverse but ethnically diverse, thats a different story...LA, the Bay Area, NYC are true exceptions in the US. Chicago's up there but it does lack in a couple areas, Miami is way up there too...

There are different races as you know and Toronto's strong point when it comes to minorities is its Asian population (especially Chinese & South Asians)-> then Blacks-> all else are small percentage wise. But racial diversity is not the only measure to diversity thats where "Ethnic" diversity comes in and Toronto does not lack that and i dont think anyone can argue that fact.

G W North, i really dont want to have to argue about this cause its really pointless and will get us no where but i think you may have misunderstood me. Toronto is extremely ethnically diverse, theres no argument about that broken down by race it looks different but that does not mean its not a diverse city.

California does not receive more immigrants than all of Canada. I don't know where you got that tidbit.

Anyways, I ask again, what California cities have more immigrants than US-born people? I don't believe there are any.

The original topic wasn't racial diversity or ethnic diversity, it was just "diversity".

^Ahem:

Canada 2001: 250,484

Canada 2002: 229,091

Source: CIC

California 2001: 282,957

California 2002: 291,216

Source: INS

okay next....

Here's a couple of examples and both cities are over a 100,000.

Going by 2000 census statistics for city pop only foreign born:

Daly City, California: 52.3%

Glendale, California: 54.4%

Correct it was about the generic term "diversity" then the thread starters first line went into "hispanic" influence. So can we squash this and move on now?

Census 2000

Hialeah

226,419 people

Foreign Born 72%

speak langauge other than english at home 93%

Hardly the most diverse city in America, but just though I'd throw that in.

where do you get the immigration statitistics from Urbanguy? I'd be intereted to see how miami is doing in bringing in different groups of people.
