Nicolet or Nicollet?

I originally posted this over a month ago in the USA Midwest/Minnesota/Twin Cities forum, but it did not receive any responses there. So I will post it again here, where hopefully more members will see it. The name Nicolet is spelled with one "l" in Wisconsin, and with two "l"s (Nicollet) in Minnesota. Which is the proper spelling of Jean's last name?

I have usually seen it with two "l"s. This is not to say that either spelling is known to be absolutely correct. Spelling was a bit more fluid in those days.
