$303 million school construction program

A $303 million Montgomery school construction program, which will include several new schools and replacement or renovation of others, is funded and will commence soon. The program will affect high schools, middle schools and elementary schools. The plan includes a new George Washington Carver High School.

Groundbreaking for the new $36.6 million George Washington Carver High School will be held this afternoon. The 200,000 sq ft school for about 1,200 students will open in 2010. The new school will be built behind the existing Carver High. After construction is complete, the old school buildings will be torn down and the area will be used as parking lots and green space.

The new Carver High is part of the $164 million Phase 1 of the school construction program. Phase 1 calls for additions and renovations at Dalraida and Pintlala elementary schools and the construction of six new schools. The six newly constructed schools will be Carver High, Johnnie Carr and Bellingrath middle schools and Davis, Floyd and Wilson elementary schools.

Phase 1 of the school construction program is now well underway. Groundbreaking ceremonies will be held July 10th for the new Johnnie R. Carr Middle School, which will be the third new school to begin construction this year. The new Carver High School and Wilson Elementary are already under construction.
