Stretching from the Georgia state line northeast of Gadsden to the Gulf of Mexico, the 631-mile Alabama Scenic River Trail officially opens June 6th at 11 a.m. with a kickoff at the Montgomery Riverwalk. As part of the grand opening celebration, guided trips are planned along the route from mid-May to July.

Ardie Olson of Cumming, Georgia won a $1,000 prize yesterday for being the first person to complete the Alabama Scenic River Trail. Olson completed the trail in a 20 foot kayak in 13 days, averaging over 48 miles per day. He said the most difficult part of the journey was getting his kayak through the steep portage trails around the dams on the Coosa River.

Maybe the trail will catch on as a destination for paddlers around the country.
