It's amazing that the Palmetto Compress is almost complete considering it was nearly demolished. I wonder if the Mexican restaurant is Monterrey's? The location is not terribly far from their old spot

Wild Question. I know I'm probably getting annoying with all this questions now but What do you guys think that the Innovista Riverfront William st be lined with High Rise Hotels,Condos, Apartments and Student Housing.

and by High rise I mean 12 stories or higher. I always have this vision of The Riverfront looking something like Myrtle Beach with Hotels Apartments and such lining the waterline. IDK its just a dream of mines. Maybe if the state lift the Gambling law we could see a Casino in downtown also and the riverfront would be a good spot for that. its just an idea and dream I had.

I would love that, but I plan on moving to New York anyway so I can get my feel of what I wish columbia was …so I don't think my opinion counts.

Yeah the idea i was thinking was a lot of buildings lining NYC Riverfronts and stuff. i think a small version of that for the Innovista is would be good.

I think it depends on how closely the city follows the Innovista plan. There do not seem to be many restrictions on height anywhere in the city other than the Vista. I doubt they will go above 12 stories. There is no lack of land on the bluffs, the economics in general do not support that kind of height (yet), and the area is right above a federal flood plain. I envision something more like Savannah's River Street: shops and restaurants with a few floors of apartments above them and a hotel anchoring the row.

These appear to be around six or seven stories max (probably shorter), so everyone has good sight lines of the river, and the natural beauty of the river isn't overwhelmed by the buildings surrounding it. When this plan came out circa 2009, I saw those pictures, and thought "THAT is where I want to live"!

I went to an urban planning session, open to the public recently. I asked about the Sasaki plan. It is still the plan that everything is modeled on. So, take a look at those pictures, and think about what Columbia should look like in about 10 more years..unbelievable!

when i looked at the PDF official plans. the high areas was 6-7 stories minimum. meaning the lowest would be 6-7 stories but I believe it can be higher if who ever builds in those areas.

SSSOOOO I took a drive past 650 Lincoln today and noticed that those tree across the street from the construction site on Devine St. are gone. and the ground is being torn up. Is this the other Dorm now under construction because I noticed construction equipment and dirt all in that spot now.

Are you talking about the block where the mini-power plant sits close to Park Street?

I noticed that too when I had driven around my route I do every week. Guess it's under construction now, if I'm not mistaken the start date said spring 2015.

This is to be the identical twin to 650 Lincoln? If so, that will really bolster density.

The Cigar Factory in Charleston is slated to open this summer. I looked at the video on Youtube, and the structure is not dissimilar from the vastness of the Palmetto Compress Warehouse. We'll have to keep an eye on it as a potential model for the retail aspect of its redevelopment.

Honestly I'm surprised that Richland County is performing the first phase of the work considering it benefits USC exclusively and is more of an aesthetic project. I'm happy that the school does not have to find the funding for the transformation, but it makes me wonder how much control the penny board really has over the process. I really hope they hit or beat the 2019 target for the bridge- that will be huge for connectivity.
