Transit in Nashville

A good article by WW from a few days ago..

http://nashvillecitypaper.com/content/city-news/electronic-signs-will-soon-greet-you-bus-stops

This is exciting to me! Especially when they eventually roll out real time schedules to mobile devices (i assume they mean like smartphones, etc).

But the signage will no doubt drastically improve MTA's service where ever it is implemented.

I assume the next step in service improvement will be what PHofKS mentions above? Signal priority.

Jice,

Thanks for the kind words. MTA is doing a strong job overall. They have a tough job, but they seem to "get it."

What a great article! Being a Lipscomb Grad myself I'm excited to hear about the We-Car program along with many other Green initiatives. Car crowding has been a major problem on campus for more than the last decade. It would be nice to see this instituted at all major universities. I wonder if it could help cut down on the number of vehicles packing our streets if it was adopted on at a large scale?

Lipscomb University has a WeCar program now! Wow!!

I think it will help a little. If it was on a large scale, it could make an impact. I want to say downtown Nashville has a car program like this? I am pretty sure they have a bike share program. I can see programs like that help downtown living and visitors. A program like this is cool for college students who may not have a car for long and/or short trips. Just went to Baltimore and rented a car which was nice because I didn't have to add miles to my own car, plus it was nicer. It's just a couple of cars so we will see how it does. Hopefully well!

I know of at least 2 WeCar spots downtown.. one in the Gulch, one somewhere near the Stahlman (I think on Union St). Probably others somewhere.

Also, Vanderbilt and Belmont both have Zipcar's on campus.

Thanks Jice. I thought there was.

Murfreesboro just opened the second public electric car charging unit. The first in MT was in all places, Pulaski!!

Ok, I am getting a bunch of gibberish trying to post the link. It's on News Channel 5's site.

In a unanimous voice vote, the Regional Transportation Authority agreed to restructure itself so that it is able to receive “dedicated funding” from local governments to build and operate mass transit throughout the area.

I'm not completely sure what this means.. but one step closer to dedicated funding sounds great to me.. bring on the street cars/light rail/something!

MTA has hired a NYC based firm to study the West End - Broadway corridor in the next 12months..

I noticed some of those little wires running across the road on West End recently.. wonder if that is part of it? I think these study traffic patterns?

Ridership up for transit in the area. MTA up 13% this March from last March, the Star is up 30%, and the RTA buses are up 39%!!!

While I was in the Vanderbilt area, I saw an MTA articulated (assuming hybrid) bus which was taking riders to the Riverfront Station from West End to ride the Star (around 4:30-ish pm). I also saw, twice, once in the morning, once this afternoon, the RTA leased(?) grey line buses which have an ad stating something like "55 less cars off the road." Pretty sweet, I love that area of town.

I was also able to attend the Earth Day Celebration/Festival, and met a couple of people from Transit Now Nashville. RTA and MTA were also there and a new MTA articulated bus.

edit: Vanderbilt is a transportation mecca. I saw two of the Grey Line RTA buses and the STAR articulated bus plus a regular STAR bus this morning. I think this area is ripe for LRT.

Hmm.. light rail would be great of course.. but a different article i read the other day made it sound as if street cars are the likely choice.

Either way.. this article (link below) is the first I recall hearing "on the ground in four years" being mentioned. I wonder what they actually mean by that?

I keep meaning to go to one of the public meetings but can never make it on time...

Yeah, ok, you're right. I should have clarified, street cars with the light rail look. Check out the Transit Now because I believe they have the West End/Broadway Corridor meetings to view through online or podcasts, er, some sort of technology. I think they said they were aiming to have something in place in 5 years.
