Seattle or Portland?

Here is another thread; similar to my Cincinnati or Louisville thread. Hopefully this one will generate more discussion. Which city, Seattle or Portland, is more progressive, more cool, and has more to offer in terms of quality of life than the other? I have never been to either city, but would like to visit both.
