And so we let the oil companies do more drilling in the USA and say there are some big discoveries. What is preventing the oil companies from exporting that oil to sell in more lucrative markets? (and thus prices don't change)

Considering the news today, this topic should probably be opened back up. Does anyone know of projections about oil off the coast of NC? I think most of the oil that's out in the Atlantic is off the coast of Florida and of course there's still plenty that can be found in the Gulf of Mexico. The Bakken Formation area of western North Dakota has billions of oil to be obtained. There is no silver bullet though. I think the only way out of this includes the concepts of more drilling, pushing alternatives and conservation. We ignore any of those 3 things at our peril.
