I get the newsletter, but I'm not in town currently. Were you there? What was the buzz about? Anything you can say on this forum?

Yes, I was there. No, nothing specific though it's worth mentioning it's now 5 years old and they had 5 at their first meeting. Last night I estimated attendance around 150.

Some local coverage (I.E. WZZM) of Hanger 42's opening at the old Lear plant here. Walker now has the state's largest studio and the world's largest sound stage.

Here's one thing I found interesting from their press release:

As a full-service film production studio, Hangar42 Studios will offer production and pre- and post-production space, a state-of-the-art screening room, ample office space for clients and a full range of concierge services to assist producers with everything they need while shooting in Michigan. Services range from location scouting, lodging and couriers to props, security and catering in the studio‟s 12,000-square-foot commissary.

“One of the unique offerings of Hangar42 Studios will be our full-service concierge services program which will truly make us a one-stop shop for film producers as we‟ll have a dedicated team to assist them with every aspect of production,” said Peters. “We already have some preferred vendors lined up to serve as partners for specific goods and services and are working now to build out our roster to ensure that we have a trusted local partner for anything and everything a producer may need for their project.”

Peters added: “Hangar42 Concierge Services will multiply the economic impact to the local West Michigan community and tie more companies, people and jobs to the growing film industry.”

...In other words, they'll be partnering up with local vendors to provide producers with goods and services.

I don't know if you'll get many responses to that question. ;) I'm thinking that since we live in a city where all nudity is "banned/evil/will make you rot in hell" that it wouldn't go over too well. :dontknow:

I think the news of a movie production facility in this location is fantastic! One question though, $45 million dollars?! What does that include (it sounds like they bought their share of the building, but what else?).

Joe

This is awesome news. I always thought the west side of GR desired a little more action. A 45 foot ceiling does seem like a restriction in some ways though.

Speaking of action, anyone have anymore info about how the Michigan Film Office is handling interactions with porn companies? Has anyone set up shop? For the past couple of months I've been mulling over how a adult entertainment business could/would interact with West Michigan's culture and economy. I'd like to expound on the idea more here but I'm not sure if UP-ers are fond of the conversation.

I know the tax incentive law excludes "obscenity or obscene performance" for that reason specifically, so it's highly doubtful that any pornographic film applying for a tax break will get approved. I heard somewhere that when they were doing Offspring, that horror movie filmed in Muskegon, some of the nude scenes in the script had to be taken down a notch before the state would grant the tax breaks.

I don't see many adult productions that would really benefit from the incentives. Basically all you need in a pro-sumer level camera, a light kit, a location, a cast and crew for maybe a day or two and an internet connection to put it online. total cost: not much... I think, I don't really know

Hanger42- from the pictures it looks like they will need to remove the vertical supports, I can see how they would get in the way. Hopefully we'll land some big flicks now. I read somewhere about a Transfromers 3, possibly, I also heard they are looking at blowing up part of the Packard plant in Detroit for it, if they can't get space in Detroit GR isn't too far.

BTW Joe, you need to put Paul Schrader's 1979 movie Hardcore on your Netflix queue. Grand Rapids is already inextricably linked to the porn industry forever. tongue.gif

Grand Rapids has super hot Dutch chicks, though.

That's an incentive in itself.

Believe me, I watched that movie more than once on Cinemax as a young lad. :)

I would like to rent it again to see the shots of GR. Would be interesting to see the change.

Actually, I make my friends watch the movie not so much for the scenes from Grand Rapids, but to explain the dutch/calvinist environment in which I was raised. It's interesting and somewhat bizarre seeing George C Scott explain the T.U.L.I.P. acronym ;)

btw, you can watch the movie online for free at the internet movie data base website (IMDB).

Wow, even just the opening looking up Monroe Center looks pretty cool:

Whether it was deception or the title hadn't been decided yet, Paul Schrader told the locals that the working title of the movie was Pilgrim. I imagine getting co-operation for some of the scenes would have been much harder otherwise. I haven't bothered to look at the video but I think I remember there are some church scenes.

Here's a link containing some trivia about the movie including that Grand Rapids was not going to allow any more movies to be shot in town. I don't really know if that's true, or if there was much chance of another movie coming to Grand Rapids anyway. I was living in Detroit at the time.

I watched it and I do recall maybe one interior church scene. A lot of shots of church exteriors.

It's funny when the private detective meets the Father at the "Pant-Lined" hotel, and then they walk next door to a porn theater that looked like it would be where Devos Place is now, to watch the film that his daughter is in. It would make sense, based on people saying Monroe Avenue was "skid row" back in the 50's and 60's.

It's also interesting that the film is called "hardcore," but would probably just get an R rating today.

I watched them film Hardcore (yes, it was called "The Pilgrim"), and remember seeing George C. Scott walking along a snowy street on the West Side for one scene. There was a big interior church scene, done in an old Christian Reformed church (4th?) near Bridge Street which I think is now used by another denomination. A bunch of people I knew tried to get jobs as extras in that scene.

As for T.U.L.I.P., not being either Dutch or from a Calvinist upbringing, what is it?

The Chaos Experiment (formally The Steam Experiment) - The Val Kilmer movie shot in GR premiered on The Movie Channel last night. Anyone watch it? I watched a little. Some nice exterior and interior shots of the Pantlind, Boars Head and the GR Press building. I set the DVR to catch it if it shows again.

In commemoration of the Caught in the Crossfire premiere on Tuesday, he's the official trailer courtesy of Youtube:

(Beware, the trailer's R-ratedph34r.gif)

Just based on the trailer alone, seems like the movie'll have some nice shots of GR. I'm a little miffed at the generic movie set cop cars, but near the end are some quick shots of the sleek blue GRPD cruisers.

It'll be another straight-to-DVD release; I read somewhere it'll be sometime in July.
