Much of the HPD "math" is just wrong. A change from 0 to 1 is not a 100% increase, and a change from 2 to 0 is not a 200% decrease. They screw this up week after week.

good to see that the frequency of rapes has slowed down and we are now much lower than last year.

I hope to see the murders slow down and und up even slightly lower than last year. Last year was a bad year, so if we tie that we are not doing well at all.

sadly the 3 most important numbers in my opinion are all worse than last years.

Hartford residents should keep an eye on the far more common property crimes as well as the one usually random violent crime - robbery. Shootings, murders, and assaults are important (in the macro sense) because they give the city negative press and possibly work more to stunt investment than other indicators - at the same time they are generally committed by those who know each other.

It depends on what you attach more importance to - innocent people suffering in the present or future revitilization compromised.

Major Crime Down In City, But Images Of Violence Linger

By JEFFREY B. COHEN {sodEmoji.{sodEmoji.|}}The Hartford Courant

January 1, 2009

In a year when major crime declined slightly in Hartford, it's difficult to forget a bloody night in August when a relative of the city's police chief was killed and six juveniles were wounded by gunfire in a violent end to the festive West Indian parade.

All told, 11 people were shot that weekend, victims of what Police Chief Daryl K. Roberts said wasn't the old-school gang violence of the 1990s, but new-school

not sure if it is a PR push, or just happens to be a little wave of victories for police, but I noticed quite a few stories recently about people charged for older crimes, and criminals caught in the act, and even police shooting criminals. It makes the area look tougher on crime.

There was a hartford man shot by albany police

an east hartford police dog stabbed, then the guy charged police and was shot

some of the perpetrators of last summers july 4th shootings have been arrested and it sounds like the police have others involved in the 2 gangs involved on tap for further arrests.

then today news about more arrests associated with the I-384 bodies

Well, weren't they having secret grand juries forcing witnesses to come testify to help solve some these murders?

IIRC - People were either too scared to come forward with information in fear of retribution, or they just simply "didn't snitch" to keep the "code of the streets". Then came the secret juries and the subpeonas.
