Although the design is not the most appealing, it doesnt look as "ghetto" as the current structures look. IMO seaward is a prime location to be lined with rowhouses from Fulton to Bridge. It is basically the division of residential and commercial facing the city. Its in a perfect sport for higher density living and being that there are a lot of students that has to happen. The neighborhood obviously is not adjusting to the fact that there is a university accross the street.

Check your north arrow there, Brent. Parking is in back (to the west). The buildings are almost touching the sidewalk, and just beyond the right margin is the GVSU Pew campus. The project is directly across from the beautiful new parking deck that has an arched window delineating the easement.

Live map, hovering over Adobe and looking north:

Here's an additional rendering of the project that we showed yesterday. Suffice to say that it seems that the planning commission is uncomfortable with the density and that they have a different vision of what this project should look like. Yesterday more than a couple of commissioners said they liked the townhouse concept better.

The "great quotes" you refer to are mostly sound bites, the more "controversial" the better, as far as the Press is concerned. I would suggest everyone concerned about this topic take the time to read the Planning Commission minutes. The July 10 meeting at which the initial request was tabled is available now on the City's website. "The truth will set you free" (sound bite).

What does she think that college students do besides study (at a desk), surf the web (at a coffee bar), go to class (across the street), work out (ditto), or go out to socialize (elsewhere)?

Presently, the current residents can be seen sitting on their tiny front porches where they talk, enjoy a beverage, and watch Seward go by. I don't see lots of gardening or swingsets or croquet games.

In a stunning turn of events, the applicant resubmitted a "back-up" site plan of single family homes on a cul-de-sac, to rave reviews from the Planning Commission and Westsiders. Grown men were seen weeping with joy at the turn of events. UP was unable to get any quotes from anyone due to the sheer "choked-up-ness" of the crowd. All 11 proposed homes were sold on the spot, with many cash buyers. One person in the crowd, through choked back tears, stated "See, I told you we could be another Chicago".
