It seems like the downtown community is up in arms over the place. Although it's good to have businesses downtown, I'm finding it hard to believe that the positives outweigh the negatives of this club. Imagine you're walking at 1:30am and you see a guy get shot dead in front of you. Not to mention, the riffraff standing outside the club. Needless to say, sadly, it's the rap music nights that have the problems.

Blu was recently sold and the new owner has every intention of bringing back the Russian Lady.

About a month ago, I guy who I know that bounces at Blu caught a few guys trying to sneak in the back through a fire escape. When confronted, one of the guys pulled out a gun and shot at the bouncer. He missed and the people trying to sneak in scattered, but thats crazy. They have had so many shootings at that club in the last few years. When I go out for a good time, the last thing I want to worry about is stray bullets. What's wrong with people?

Blu is not safe at all. Even Agave clears out about an hour before closing time because no one wants to be in that area when they let the club out. Unfortunately, it basically reinforces every negative stereotype you can imagine. I think the problem is that it's the only real hip-hop place downtown so everyone goes there...more people = more possibilities of problems. It also has gained a reputation that attracts the wrong crowd, in my opinion.

Yes, he still works security for clubs and special events. Its how he makes a living.

The Russian Lady closed in the mid 1990's and was a Hartford drinking institution for decades. It was in the building that now houses Blu. It had a backbar with backlit stained glass windows on the first floor, live music on the second floor and a patio on the roof. It got its name from a huge copper "Mother of Russia" sculpture of that sat on its facade/roof above Ann St that was salvaged from the Russian American Insurace Company when it was torn down on Broad and Farmington. The sculpture now sits on display in the lobby of the ultra hip boutique Hotel Dream in Manhattan.
