PROPOSED: J&W Downcity Campus Plans

Both universities have the money, have the need for more space and are already there. But they should be required to be the highest bidder for the land. If they have there eye on a particular parcel they both better be the highest bidder.

If not then they will have to "lobby" who ever is. there should be no special deals or amendments for them or any one else. Again they have the money bad economy or not.

Didn't Brown just announce three new multi-million projects in the last few weeks?

And J&W has four campuses across the US. Providence is the smallest one.

Both schools have been planning for this expansion for years. and have been setting funds aside. It is to important a move for them not to acquire this land. Which is why they are putting pressure on the state house.

They laid off workers because they could get away with it. Their "sales" aren't down. Nor is their enrollment. At either school.

I am sure when this is all finished Brown will get the land they want and J&W will get the land that they need. But they should have to go through the same process as anyone else to get it. And that will involve outbidding the commerical real estate holding companies in this state and elsewhere who view that land as very valuable.

It looks from the map that JWU already owns most of the land they plan to expand on. The new Student Center, Student Housing, and Xavier Quad all are planned for land that is now occupied by the three JWU commuter parking lots. So they need a section of land at the old 195 split between Clifford and Friendship adjacent to the Johnson Lot to build the new parking garage (which you need if you want to build anything), College of Business, The Hospitality College, and the hotel.

I don't think the point is how much will be paid for the land but whether the planned development will create meaningful and sustainable economic growth in the area. Right now, most of the economic impact from JWU is in the Downcity area. If the university expands as planned, this could be huge for the Jewelry District. Except for a few bars, its pretty quiet down there right now. We desperately need to focus on growing business and creating jobs here in Providence.

If someone pays big bucks (or a few bucks more than the universities) for the old 195 and then holds onto it for 25 years, how many jobs will that create?
